Ideas why the lever on a Winchester 71 I am looking at acquiring, drops down 1/4" when the action is closed? the locking bolts also drop down a tiny bit also after closing the bolt. Cosmetic or functional problem? friction stud/spring problem? Thanks.

I fixed one that had the same symptoms by fitting a new friction stud. It fixed both problems.

Numrich has them for $3 - http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=7723 . See page 3 of the parts list - part key 41, part number 229280. I'd recommend you replace the Friction Stud Spring while you're at it - part key 42, part number 229290A.
