Just wanted to thank everyone who resonded with some excellent suggestions on sights for my Shiloh Sharps. After careful consideration, talked with the folks at Montana Vintage Arms and decided on a #130 tang sight with the peep bored out to .090. Front is a combination, with a bead and a blade. You just roll it 90 degrees to select the one you want. Just got them today so have not mounted them yet. Can say they "look" good and I am anxious to get them on and see how they work. Ah but that is the problem. Folks from South Africa coming in early in April and some from New Zealand late in the month and I have to take a 10 day trip to South America in between. Hope to get a day somewhere in there but that is all I can hope for. If that day is bad, it will have to wait until early May. But, the job is what pays for the toys so can't complain. TM

Great choices! You can't go wrong with MVA. They're kinda the Leupold of vintage sights in that they set the standard for quality and service.

You can't go wrong with MVA sights. I have them on 2 of my (4) BPCR rifles (one's an original Ballard and it has its original sights on it).

That said, I'd have to say that while I always thought they looked "cool" (and practical), in actually using the "Beech's" style front sight that came on my Lonestar "Buffalo" rifle

it wasn't, sight picture wise, what I had hoped for (at least not for long range target work).

It didn't take me long and I had it changed out (can always put it back on in a few minutes) with an MVA #113, which is my favorite non-adjustable front sight.

Actually, I'd have to say that the MVA #113 is "one of" my favorite front sights. I have a friend who got a Mike Baldwin Spirit Level Front Sight and I think that's now my 1st choice! So nice, the spirit level INSIDE the sight which prevents sun glare from reflecting off the glass spirit level when the light's just "wrong"!

But, it sounds like you already HAVE the Beech's sight? Give it a try and see what you think. I found I really don't like "Globe on Pin" front sights.

Bill, With my eyes, long range shooting is out of the picture. (literally) What I asked for was a hunting set up for shots to 100, 150 yards max. For that, I think I will really like the Beech front sight with the 130 rear. Hope to know in a week or so if I can get enough of a break to try them out. If I could shoot long distance, I would probably have gone with a different front sight but me thinks I am going to like this one for hunting. TM

If not, then for "hunting" sights the standard Nickel Silver front blade like they put on Shiloh Sharps etc. is supposed to be pretty good also.

I've read of some folks duplicating the same sight using a copper blade for best all around visibility.

I have that setup on my Shiloh 50x 2.5". It works well enough for hunting; only problem is that when the sun is out it is hard to get a consistent sight picture with it glaring off that blade. Had it at a shoot this weekend for a bunch of people to try; they had little trouble hitting steel at 200 yards with it though. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Bill, Mine came with the silver blade on the front and that is what I had so much trouble seeing. If I can ever get the rifle to the smith to get the front sight put on, I will be glad to let everyone know how she does. For now, I have pretty high hopes. :-) TM
