I have owned a Ruger No 1 Safari in 458WM for 15 years now. That rifle has accounted for over a hundred water buffalo and a lot of wild pigs. It is my favourite rifle. For a big calibre it is surprising accurate and will shoot 100 yard clover leaves as long as I can ignore the recoil off the bench.

I also have another No 1 in 25/06 which has had a harsh life and will soon be re-incarnated as a 25 short mag of some variety.

I do prefer single shot rifles, finding them noce to handle, point and shoot. The ethic of the single shot appeals to me as well.

My hunting buddy just leaned over my shoulder and suggested that a clover leaf group from a 458 was not necessarily much of a group, the unkind so-and-so!

Hunt101 lost the pictures in my original post, so here she is again. Low Wall in .260. Stock has had the factory glossy finish removed and re-finished in an oil type finish. I'm proud of her. She shoots good too...

Here is my recently acquired 1B Hornet that thrives on 40gr. V-max's, 13.5 grs. Lil'Gun and Remington 1/1/2 pistol primers. Feed it anything else and five shot groups grow bigger than an inch at 100. the load is likes has put over 20 five shot groups into less than .85".

Just picked up another one a little while ago ( it's still in the mail).
Ruger No.3 with custom butt stock, Morgan recoil pad, and the lever changed to accomadate the pistol grip.
30" Badger barrel, Tiger front sight, and rear receiver sight with enough elevation to go past 1,000 yards.

This is going to be fun with BP and cast 500 grainers!!

1B,

Don't avoid the 405. It is an absolute blast to shoot, and mine is an absolute drill. I loaded up some 300 gr Barnes X bullets and put three of them through the same hole at 50 metres with open sights. Opened up to 62 calibre and 100% weight retention in fine sand. Tons of fun!

Shootist,

With my aging eyes, I could not put three through the same hole with open sights using a French 75 at 25 yards!

Good one you

I am in the market for a decent scope, cause my eyes are not getting any clearer either. But this one shoots. And so does my Buffalo Classic 45-70. Half inch groups at 50 metres with irons. How come I had to wait to get to 55 years old to get a couple of really fun guns????

I started hunting with a Ruger 1A 30/06. Sold it to buy something else 20 years ago. Recently bought a K1A 35 whelen and I just picked up my next K1A 7.62x39 pictured below.
