Hi all, just wondering if you can form 284 brass from 6.5X284 brass without any problems? Just thinking so a person can use good brass like Lapua instead of Winchester brand?

I bump from 284Win to 25-284 in a single pass. The .264" reduction is a breeze..................

You can easily neck the 6.5 brass up to .284 with a tapered expanding ball such as the one on Hornady dies among others.

There might be a problem. Don't forget that Lapua brass is larger at the base than WW. The Lapua brass, nicely necked up to 284, may not fit your chamber depending on which reamer was used. Not the neck/shoulder, but down near the base.

Been there with a 25-284. And I too necked down from 284 to 257 in one pass, just use new brass.

Am I misunderstanding the OP's intent here?

As I understand him he is wishing to use Lapua, Hornady, Nosler, or Norma 6.5-284 brass for his .284 because he dislikes the Winchester brand .284 brass.

RickF, wasn't aware of the dimensional difference with Lapua brass. Thanks.

I bought some Lapuas for my 6.5x284 and had to modify a shell holder to use them. Most didn't fit my standard shell holder for whatever reason.
I pesonally have had no problems with Win brass. Buy them by the 500 count and split them between 284 and 6.5x284.

I have necked down from .284 to .264 and .243, but never gone up. I don't see any reason that going up .020 would cause any problems.

Thanks for the replies! I wasn't aware of Lapua cases being large at the base. Any other ideas? I'm really not a fan of Winchester brass, thanks.

Try Nosler, Hornady, or Norma brass.

Wiktor, take this for what it's worth.

I have used a ton of WW 284 brass over the years. It is very hard, and just simply great brass. I would have zero issues or worries with going with WW brass for any 284 based rifle I bought.

What is wrong with Winchester/Olin 284 brass?

I've been using it for over 30 years to feed a variety of 284s and 284 wildcats without any problems. I think that Winchester/Olin may take special care when making the 284 brass, since so much of it is used in wildcats that folks are loading to max+ pressures.

It and their 300Win, yup. I use that in my 358 Norma long neck.

I've never tried their 284 brass. Last Winchester brass I've used was 308 and it was junk, loose and tight primer pockets and short case length on many of the new cases. I just assumed quality has gone downhill. Been using Lapua lately and there is no comparison.
