Who makes the best travel rods for the money. I'm looking at Cabela's and St. Croix right now. My concern is that 4 or 5pc rods will be heavier and less responsive than 2pc. I want a 3-4wt rod for backpacking. Both manufacturers claim great things, but I'm looking for feedback from the real world. Thanks in advance.

I like the temple fork 4 piece for the money and don't forget ebay...I picked up a 1938 wright and mcgill trail master, trout rod, 4 weight, 7' - 9" fiberglass for $48, including shipping...it's a beauty...original sock and tube...I love to fish that rod...I throw a SA 4W DTF gpx on it and it rocks...I like it better than my orvis 3 or 5 weights.....Boots

222Rem,
I bought a 5 pc. rod from Cabela's (Stowaway?). It's a 7 1/2' 4 wgt. Came with reel, line, and two rod cases(one has the pouch for leaving the reel on) for about $125. My first fish with it was about a 22" brown on a dry fly. What a hoot! Can't go wrong with a set-up like that for the money. I'd never spend big bucks on a rod. If you don't like you at least don't have a ton of cash in it.

Thanks for the advice. Qtip, that's the exact rod setup I was looking at. Price aside, are you happy with the action and overall weight, or do you feel like you've just made a good compromise?

222Rem,
When I ordered it I had reservations that it would be junk. However when it came I actually was surprised; and even more so when I used it. Cast like a dream for me. I told a good friend of mine from PA about it. He told me that one of the rags did a test on travel rods and the one I had came in second place beating out many with much higher price tags. His word is good for me. He is a professional tyer with many of his examples in some of the better books on patterns and tying. Hey; for $125 at todays prices you really can't go wrong-IMHO. And besides; with Cabela's track record on returns you could always send it back if you don't think it's worth it.

Look at www.hookhack.com They have a Pflueger 5 pc 5 wt 8 ft for about $55. Bought one for a back up/loaner/guest rod and was surprised at how good the quality is. They usually have an on line discount too. Art/Wyoming

mrfisher,
He's from the King of Prussia area I believe. Actually we haven't had much contact in about year since I'm not active in TU anymore.
