In the photo is my rat that I will be using for Hog hunting. I bought the rifle late last fall. It was a takedown model F I think in was made in 1926 if I remember right. It was very clean but would classify as a wood rat. The stock had been sawed off. Therefore NO collect value. It was chambered for 30-30 and the barrel was good, I sold it to a member here. I then made a 1/2 rd 1/2 oct barrel 24" long from a blank I had. Always wanted a takedown with an oct. barrel. I made the stock from a blank but I talked about that a while ago in another posting. I did the engraving and finishing. The barrel is blued and the receiver is French Grey. The sights are a Lyman tang, a Lyman #6 with the 2 fold down leaves and I made the front blade. There will be 4 pictures.

I don't know much about engraving but looks very nice to me. Always thought it was something I would like to try my hand at. How would you rate the quality and difficulty againt other pieces you have done? How many hour do you have in the engraving on this piece? Any problems with making a TD octagon barrel? Nice wood, too!

Hi Rick. I'm going to tell you the one secret that will answer your question about if you can engrave. Take a piece of paper and a pencil and if you can draw scrolls, flowers, animals, then you can engrave. Because there is no difference between the two. The gun is the paper and the graver is the pencil. Done flat serious. I really don't engrave much anymore. The engraving is for the beholder to decide if they like it or not. I'm never happy so I'm not a good judge. The octagon possed no troubles.

LRF, I have the same desires as Rick, but if you are telling us that you did that freehand, no way for me. I could follow a stencil or pattern of some sort. Is there a way to engrave like that? Beautiful rifle, great work.
That's a beautiful rifle and you have every reason to be proud of it! It's a class act.
Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. -- Daniel Webster
I dare say there is no PIG and no RAT left in this rifle. It is VERY NICE. Great job. Excuse me, but what is the process for French Grey?? Is it a coating, plating, treatment or what?
WOW...great looking rifle! Think you're being a little modest on your engraving skills. Would love to have that kind of talent....& not too many people do.
