In a St. Croix ad a couple years ago, they mentioned the people with the fancy rods cleaning their handles with baking soda (I like their reverse-snob ads). Is that the standard procedure for cork cleaning? Dry scrub or paste? I've got a couple handles that could use a cleaning. Also, is their any other treatment/preservative for cork, or just use it?

200-300 grit sandpaper works pretty good, will clean up surface but not take out fish blood stains etc.

There's a cork sealer out there, name escapes me right now. It's supposed to keep the junk from staining the cork.

I've never really thought about cleaning the grips on my rods, got a couple that have darkened over the years, but nothing I would clean.

I found if I leave the rod outside the tent at night the porcupines will gnaw the handle to a nice textured but clean surface.

Cleaning cork and your vest is bad luck. Leave the stains on as a reminder of the good fishing trips you have had.

I like Lava hand soap. Wash your hands with the Lava and while is is still lathered just stroke your cork. Cleans and smoothes all in one application. Also cleans your hands. All my rods get the once a year rub down.
