I don't really use power bait anymore, but intead use power eggs. They're scented rubber eggs that are strung together, so you can dangle one or two off the hook, to make it look like a string of fish eggs. When lures aren't working, I can usually catch one or two by using the eggs on the the end of a 3-6' leader and an egg sinker.

When I bait fish for trout I use "Pautzke's Balls O' Fire" salmon eggs under a bobber. They seam to like it.

I've never tried the power baits, but when I was a kid it took many, many jars of Balls O' Fire to keep me happy for a summer.

Trout go crazy for 'em....

FWIW:

Power Eggs are very good for stream fishing because they are tough and effective. I hooked 12 trout Saturday AM using them. My buddy caught 8. Our "guide" (a fishing maniac) landed 3 (but he only fished 1/4 time and in spots where no one else could catch anything). I use a 3 foot leader and a single split shot.

Balls o' Fire are great in ponds under a bobber.

Well, I have to share my favorite bait for rainbows and Germain Brownies. I like cheese. Not velvita but good sharp chedder cheese (although I've used mild chedder, jack and swiss work almost as well. Haven't tried Gouda or a good smelly cheese yet).

It has been a few years since I've gone fishing, but I liked to do my fishing in Northern California in the PG&E lakes by Shingletown California as well as the good streams. As a boy growing up there I was quite the game hog and would take fifty out of those holes in one day

I would chum them with the cheese. I'd toss a small bite worth from the bank and watch it slowly sink into the mirky water. If nothing happened I'd move ten feet and do it again. It didn't take long before I'd see a silver streak as the cheese quickly vanished. I'd then bait a small hook on a weightless line and toss it in the same place. Silver would strike again, I'd yank and the fight was on. Within an hour I usually had my limit (as long as the lake hadn't been fished out prior to my arrival . Letting a cheese baited line drift under the bank of a good stream worked just as well.

As I got older I gave up being a bloodthirsty savage game hog that I had been at 12. However, the cheese has always worked and if you give it a chance it will work for you too. Good fishing.

Cheese?

I think that I'll stick with fly fishing.
