Almost bought this one today. First pre-mil I have closely inspected and considered. Serial # B5301xx, stamp is especially light the last 2 digits. Cal. 250-3000 Savage. Actually liked the tang safety. The trigger was also better than both my pre-mil F's. Did not like the steel rotor look. I also like checkering on 99's. Were sling provisions offered from the factory on this model? Could anyone narrow the year down? Had the twist changed by the time this one was made? Seller was asking $750, offered it to me for $650. May regret passing on it someday as I did like many of it's attributes.

No on the swivels if it was a 99A. $650 is a fair price for one. I have seen them go for higher. My 99A 250 was given to me by a friend. That makes mine priceless. Even killed a deer with on his farm. Mine has a Redfield 2-7 LowPro on it. Great rifle. Not sure on the year. There is much worse that you could spend $650 on. You probably will get a PM from someone if you decide not to get it. They are cool little carbines.

As a lefty I would have been tempted by that one--especially in .250.

Will you go buy that, plus shipping, and send it my way?

You've probably figured out or been told by now that it's not a pre-mil! I really like the 99As manufactured in the 1970s and 80s, but still don't have one.

$650 is a fair price despite Lauren hatred for post-mils, I'm surprised he did not say he would buy it to turn a buck.

Well based on some of the comments and PM's I should have picked that one up. Just got home from the show and it did not sell. The dealer (not local)is a regular and I'll likely see him again. If nothing else I got a education about 99a's. My gut said leave it alone for that amount. I was considering the sling studs, post mil, my preference for checkering, and my lack of knowledge about the 99a. Condition other than the studs was nice. Much cleaner fit and finish than a post mil 243 I looked at last year. It was really poor and turned me off of post mils.

My interest today turned to a 99F 308(local)that I still may trade for. Nicer condition than the one I have, likely not a collector though. I'll post pics if it works out. Thanks all for your comments.

Forgot to add: This dealer sold his Savage pistol collection some years ago to Bailey Brower (SP?) from NJ. Is/was also an acquaintance of Don Simmons who wrote about Savage Pistols. Does anyone know if these fellows are still with us? He asked if I might try to find out. Really nice guy who I enjoyed talking with at length. He thinks he knows and has dealt with cmhjohn who I met at the fest. Should have asked him for a card or his full name, only know him as "Fred".

Bailey is still around.

You did right. Everytime I have gone against my gut feel the rifle hasn't hung around too long. Buy what you like and nothing else. Your money is hard to come by, so don't fill the house with stuff that doesn't suite your tastes / needs. I have an old grey rat 99F in 243 and it shoots like a house on fire. No cracks, added sling studs, no huge marks in the wood. Just a classic well used 99F. Find what you like and settle for no less. Yeah you probably could have made a couple of bucks on that one if you decided you didn't like it, but collecting savages is way more fun as a hobby than a business. No bashing of postmil etc just my opinion.

One of the few options for a .250-3000 with a 1 in 10 twist.

Just bought ANOTHER .303 myself. I may have paid a premium, but it is in nice shape for a 1920's model and an "H" carbine. Didn't have a carbine, not a safe queen collector, and as of late infatuated with the Savage .303 round! I will post picks Tuesday when I pick it up at the feller's house.

Not trying to hijack the posts, but merely point out the theory that if you want it, can part with the extra cash, AND it pumps your 'nads, then go for it...it is your to savor, shoot, [bleep] on or do anything else to that makes you smile! HAve at it MF!

That's the EXACT reason I traded mine to Saddlering. I couldn't make it shoot worth a damn and now with the 1920 I traded for with the 1-14 twist, 87 grain pills shoot better than fantastic!!!! AND kill even better!!!!!

BTW...Steve (1899Sav)sold me a post-mil 1970's vintage "A" in .250 that I am really satisfied with. Love it! Has a wrist repair that his now passed FIL did exquisitely. The guy was a fantastic wood worker and very anal about his work. I love the thing and it shoots the chunkier booooooolits.
