that the engine is kaput. Are there any of the original Troy-Bilt engines available anywhere? I'm probably going to wind up with the tiller and would like to get it running again.

Can't use a Briggs or Honda? I had a machinist friend that did that with a TB. It wasn't pretty but it ran and was a hell of a lot cheaper than the $700 he was quoted for a replacement from TB. The take away was to check the oil EVERY time you run it. LOL
They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

I have an old Merry tiller and I dropped a Briggs on it. It runs great. I like Briggs and Stratton engines cause they seem to last for ever, but those Hondas sure run quiet.

I don't think TB ever built their own engine. There should be a bolt on replacement available, perhaps from more than one maker even. Seems they usually have a Briggs or Kohler in the old models, Hondas on some of the later models.

Is it really an engine problem, or just a plugged-up carburetor? Modern gas is 10% alcohol and 10% recycled chewing gum.

find a website that give the specs on motors: mounting base hole pattern, shaft length & diameter, left or right side drive, etc. Then match up what they have to what you need.

Mickey, What exactly is wrong with the motor? You can still get rebuild kits for most motors, and it might be a good way to go.
Another option is a Chang Fa Chinese clone of a diesel Yanmar. You can pick up those for around $500 in the crate, and it should bolt right up. Better gph and longevity over gas, and is worth considering.

You can replace it with any horizontal shaft motor. As far as mounting holes go you can make your own if they do not line up.Troy does not manufacture their own engine. It could be Tecumsah,Briggs,Kohler or who ever they got the best price from.
Its all right to be white!! Stupidity left unattended will run rampant Don't argue with stupid people, They will drag you down to their level and then win by experience

The "7Hp" was either a Kohler (GOOD) or a Tecumseh (BAD, very bad)
......Tecumseh is out of business, and parts rare to non existent.
The Kohlers are solid old Iron,....parts CAN be had, and they are well worth the rebuild.
Troy's big design failure was using float bowl carbs, and updating to a diaphragm type is cool beans, I know of a source for 'Racing" carbs that still hane adjustable main jets.
The "Flange Bolt Circle" is (I believe) 4 7/8" (2 9/16 Square Pattern) , and the shaft a 3/4"
Modifying the Trotbilt Pulley to accept the more common 1" and 25 MM (Honda) is a snap for one with a lathe or mill.
While you're that far into the the Machine check and adjust the end play on the Worm drive Bearings,....if those are kept in skew those drivelines will outlast all of us,.....
I'm kinda' looking at phasing out my Tecumseh,.....endless carb problems with this damned ethanol being one of the main reasons.
I've got a small (but growing) Troy Horse Boneyard , if anyone is in a world of hurt for an un-available part.

I've got two Troy-Bilts with Tecumseh engines and carb problems.
Anyone converted to propane as a solution?

I was sure dead wrong on the "Bolt Circle",....although that 2 9/16" "square" pattern just may work out to it.....?
That 11 HP Briggs looks like a good upgrade for the casual user.
Damn they are PROUD of those Kohlers, Eh?
Thanks for the link !

Went back and edited all the dumb dimensional call outs. This is another HOT source, and I thank you, and a couple of fine old Tillers probably will, too...... GTC
