Jost ordered your new book today, and I am looking forward to what sounds like a great read.

What are the barrel length and contour of your wife's 257 Nula?

I am thinking about rebarreling my 22 inch #1 308 to a 257. Melvin Forbes recomended the 24 inch #2 because it gives significantly more velocity than the 22 inch. Unfortunately, this will add about a pound to the rifle.

Anyone else with one of these rifles feel free to comment.

Also curious if the 257 Bob does well with the Model 20 and 3 inch mag or whether the Model 24 NULA is best suited for the 257?

I have read here were several members have an COAL over 3 inches.

Don't have one nor did I sleep at a Holiday Inn Express....but can't see 2" giving "significantly" more velocity

also seems 1 lb for 2" of barrel isn't kosher either....

I think it will add only a .5 lb increase as that is the difference between a #1 and #2 taper

my nula with #2 taper at 24" in the 284 winchester with 3.5-10x40 leupold = 6.5 lbs

Not just a contour change but internal dims change making for more weight. .30 cal makes for less steel in the barrel. Drop that to .25 cal and increase the contour, add a couple of inches...I can see a pound added. Used to shoot a 26" Bob...dunno the conventional wisdom on inches vs. velocity is correct or not, but it ran quite a bit faster than most book data, this over a Chrony. Never exceeded max loads but surely exceeded the reported velocities on a regular basis. Same thing with a K-Hornet of equal length barrel.

Ain't gonna argue with Melvin in any case....he's likely to build my next one...in .257 R by odd coincidence.

No, the 24" #2 won't add a pound to the rifle. My wife's .257 Roberts NULA Model 20 weighs 6 pounds 9 ounces with a 3-9x Leupold VX-II in Talley steel detachable mounts. (The detachable mounts are so Eileen can try other scopes for hunts/assignments.)

The lighest NULA I've ever owned was a Model 20 7x57 with a 22" #1 barrel. It weighed 5 pounds 13 ounces with a 4x Leupold Compact (as it was called then) in NULA mounts. If Eileen's .257 had the same mount/scope setup, it would weigh 6 pounds 3 ounces. So I doubt the difference between the #1 and #2 would even be half a pound.

The 3" magazine on the Model 20 is plenty for the .257 Roberts, especially with the reamer Melvin uses. Eileen has used a bunch of longer, sleeker bullets in her rifle, including the 100-grain Tipped TSX, and 115-grain Ballistic Tip and Berger VLD. All can be seated out to the lands, if need be, and shoot very well.

Go 23" on the barrel. That is what mine is on my BOB and 30-06 and wouldn't have it any other way... My 257 velocities are plenty fast..

The M20 is literally made for the 257BOB length rounds.

But Miket, if he does 23" then he'll have to call it Odd Bob.

Or he could Eurospec it at 600 mm...or 23.6".

Nothing wrong with the .280 Rem., b ut does anybody know if NULA regularly chambers for the 7x64?

In his brochure he doesn't list the 7x64 for the Model 24, which includes the .25-06, .270, .280, .280AI and .30-06.

Doubt if he regularly chambers the 7x64, but that doesn't mean he will not do one.

Buy Melvin a set of chambering reamers and headspace gages and he'll do it

Yeah, Melvin will make a rifle in about any chambering you want. His personal NULA is a 7mm/.350 Remington Magnum, built in the days before the WSM and SAUM cases appeared. The action is a shortened Model 28.

Since he lists the 7x64 as an available option in the Model 24, my bet is that he always has a reamer and headspace gauges.
