Scattered a flock of robins from along the road when I went by. This is as early as I can recall seeing them. I imagine that they are finding the snow an interesting alternative to what they were expecting.

Nah, they have just been hiding all winter in large groups. Robins can be found year round in most parts of the US, they do however group up in large numbers and stick to the woods during the winter months. I bump into large numbers of Robins occasionally while muzzleloading for deer in December around here, if you see one there will several hundred of them.

The link below shows their year round range.

Didn't that woodchuck, er gopher, ahhh, groundhog, whatever, determine that it would be an early spring?

yeah, General Lee the groundhog, down at the St. Mtn Game Ranch said spring would be early this year.

meanwhile, we're working on the potentially coldest winter on record.

Mid-Feb was the earliest I saw Robins when I had to live in Kansas. End of Feb was very common.

I've had lots of robins here all winter, five miles off the Wisconsin state line. There were probably 30 of them at the bird bath yesterday. This is the first winter I've had them here, and I've been in this house for 23 years and IL for 27.
