Riley,

Last year, this lake was producing largemouth bass to about 2.5 pounds for us. There are stories of fish up to 10 pounds in this lake as well. This year, the biggest fish we've pulled out is about a pound, with most fish only 8 inches or less.

So yes, if we tie on some 1.5 - 2.5" grubs, it can be almost a 100% bite rate, but then you kind of hope that it throws the hook at the boat. Ditto for a size 8 cone head wooly bugger

The sad thing is that this lake is not stocked, and is in an absolutely beautiful setting (by California standards, it would probably rate a "pretty darn ok" by AK standards). What has probably happened is that a bunch of catch and keep fishermen have discovered it, and pulled out the majority of the larger fish. Because it is above snowline, the feeding season is short, and the fish bite very aggressively. And were probably pretty naive due to the lakes obscurity. The results - anything worth taking home, probably was.

Looking forward to my package

Scott

Are the Coho and Chinook getting ready to enter the Great Lakes tributaries soon?

FirstCast,
Have you ever tried bunny stripes on your gigs? They flutter just as well as the fethers.

The salmon are staging just offshore on Superior and the fishing is only going to get better the next few weeks.

I've been experimenting with crosscut bunny strips and you're right, they do have excellent action in the water. The fur can handle abuse and lasts longer then most feathers too. My best producing jigs have been a mixture of different feathers palmered together. The idea of a rabbit fur body with hackle tails seems intriguing.

That sounds like a fun fishery in the Great Lakes. Do the fish wait for cooler water temperatures before entering the tributaries?

Pan-sized (8-16") trout and large (18"+) whitefish on the lower Clarks Fork. Arms got tired from reeling in the trout but the whitefish were a bit more wary. Silver and lighter 1/16 and 1/8 panther martins, worms and grasshoppers. Had quite a fish fry Sunday evening.

I just got off the Denali Highway fishing for grayling and hunting for carabou and ptarmagin. (All I shot was a ground squrrel).
The grayling fishing was amazing, there was a lake that we could see a school of at least 1000 grayling.
