Help!! I'm an avid reloader, possible future bullet caster. Does anyone know of a solution to the smoke and residue problem with some cast bullets? I'm reloading a cast plain base .430 250 gr. Keith style in my .44 Special. Lube is medium blue color, sticky when pinched. Thanks. Elecgun

smoke and residue from what? Casting, shooting, melting?
Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

What powder are you using? The smoke is mostly from the lube, and will occur with just about any lubed cast bullet, in my limited experience. (I just shoot 'em - I don't make 'em.) The residue seems to clean right up with a little Hoppes.

For cleaning up firearms, after an extended cast bullet shooting session, the best is the old WWII, comes in the old OD can, bore solvent. This stuff smells awful and looks worse, works great. The second most favorite cleaner for handguns during the warm part of the year is a one gallon bucket of 'Ed's Red' home made bore cleaner. I will drop, muzzle first, the S&W #25s into the bucket when I've fired them enough to get too warn to comfortably hold the barrel. I'll continue shooting with one of the other model 25s, and when there's three model 25s in the bucket it's cleaning and break time, so I can start all over again. Jim

Thanks for all of the answers thus far. The smoke and residue is from shooting. I'm using the older version of Unique that I had leftover from a shotgun project. 7.5 grains in a Freedom Arms .44 Special. Soaking in Ed's Red sounds like an interesting solution to the cleanup.
