The write-up in the American Rifleman said it was a 1.5moa rifle, that ain't a "long-range" rifle in my book. Also, be ready to get yer bell rung.

I would get a custom action for the 338 lapua,or use a weatherby mark V 30-378,338-378,.378 action. Another option is the remington 700 338 lapua production rifle. The savage would be a last case scenario to me.

338 Ultra or Edge aint a bad way to go. If your talking a cheap gun..
SPS action $400 Micky 450 packnor or whatever barrel 600 egw base burris rings
all adds up to cheap tac gun that will shoot just fine.

I'd get a Remington 5R in .300 Win Mag before I got a Savage anything, especially their POS .338 Lapua.

Lots of anti savage folks here. Funny thing is I simply have not seen a bad shooter from savage. Nope I don't own any, but I can't say a bad thing about them, other than cosmetics to some folks that seem to be anal about looks.
Have never seen or shot the 338L though from Savage

.338 ultra in a Remington Sendero would be tough to beat for $800. I've never seen one that wouldn't do under 3/4" with the right guy behind it. Most are in the 1/2" MOA. I would rather have a 7mm mag, but if a .338 makes you giddy, go for it. At least the Remington will hold it's value, unlike Savage.
I would suggest you go and shoot 10+ rounds through any of the .338's you mention, before you dump your coin. They are a bit brutal without a break. With a break, double ear protection is a must and nobody will like shooting with you. Flinch

30-378 Accumark. If you can't get it done with it than a 338 won't help. (and you can ship it via US Mail too!)
Better stock than a 700, better trigger, better bedding and lower bolt lift.
If you like pain get a 340 WM or 338 RUM, won't kill any better but will impress the boys at the camp.
But !!!! check with Swampy on shipping it as he has replaced Bricktop as the site's shipping Guru. May be consider a "destructive device" or you may fail the Does this parcel contain anything fragile, liquid, perishable, or potentially hazardous? question.
When in doubt ask an Internet expert. We all know that if you read it on the "net" it is true!

After returning my savage 110 ba to Savage a couple of times to fix a trigger problem, I found the rifle to be accurate especially at ranges between 300 and 1000 yards using hand loads (Berger 300 gr hybrid bullets, Federal 215 primers, Lapua cases and 79.4 gr of Vihtavouri powder.) The Nightforce N2256 Scope helps a lot.

Lachy,
I would recommend that you handle and shoot one of those big boomers before you lay down a pile of "dead presidents". Otherwise, you may be selling an expensive piece of equipment at a loss. The .300 Win Mag is a good one and will do most jobs. Those really big ones are for extreme applications and maybe even for greenhorns reading too much ballistic data. Now, I'm not pointing a finger, nor do I intend to.
Just check around on what big game guides think when a hunter shows up "way overgunned". I, personally would try the .300 WM or equivalent, and if more power was needed, then move up, not the other way around.
IMHO,
DF

I'd try an Armalite AR 30 if I couldn't afford a custom build. A friend had one in 300Win that absolutely shot bugholes, that big old ugly brake made it kick like a 243 in the prone. Ugly as hell and an absolute joy to shoot.

+how many it was....before you drop cash on a .338L or ultra or edge etc, go out and shoot it and then decide if thats what you really want. They can shoot extremely well and the high BC and foot pounds are tempting but it takes a bit of trigger time to get comfortable with it. Make sure you shoot it in a similiar set up for the intended purpose. Dont go out and shoot a braked 20 lb target rifle and expect a 10 lb to be as smooth to shoot.
Also I would not consider any of the big .338s if you were not handloading, that would eat you alive buying factory ammo to become proficient.
Hunt hard, kill clean, waste nothing and offer no apologies.

I myself have 2 of the .300 Win mags in model 70 (stainless & blued) and then there is the .300 Ultra mag which does have more noticable recoil. Topping that is the custom wildcat .338/.300-Ultra Mag "Edge", it hits your shoulder like a Mike Tyson right hand. However, I am far more accurate with my old model 70 Winchester rifle, using a 200 grain Accubond bullet down range to 700 yards. It's recoil never beats me up like the other two!

Good points. Bottom line, you gotta know what you're buying and make sure it's really what you're looking for. Surprises in this business can get expensive. It's real hard to recover costs, especially with a custom build. I would think a big boomer would be even harder to sell, as the customer base would be smaller than for a more common rifle/caliber.
