My wife's aunt and uncle have one as a yard ornament because they are sueing through the lemon law because the automatic transmission slips like a fat lady on ice!
After my own experience with a Jeep catching on fire, I would not ever recommend or buy a Jeep of any flavor!

Thanks Mike, forewarned is forearmed. Sorry for your family's trouble with them.

My in-laws are looking at one with the diesel engine. I'll forward this to them so they can research it more.

I love mine, and it holds more gear than my old Larado. Had to replace the radio(Jeep did) and 42000 miles later still runs great. I ask other Liberty drivers how they like theirs, and all positive so far.

Well according to Pertersons Four Wheel Drive. The liberty is the jeep not ment for men. No offence, to anyone I'd say they are a good vehcle for highway and in town use with 4 in of snow, they are not a hard core jeep. Long live the CJ

My wife has her eye set on a new Liberty with the Diesel engine & 6 speed manual tranny to replace her aging '91 K1500 Blazer. I am agreeable to it but have yet to find the spare cash to buy one for her. --Ken

My brother in law has had one since they first came out..he has about 70M miles with little or no problems. We have used it off road a good bit in the summer and fall and it does a pretty good job. It's maybe not as off road competent as a CJ but it does a pretty good job both on and off road. About 22 mpg or better on the high way.

WyoCowboy,
As a matter of fact, I drive my Liberty to deer camp, go to the shed, and break out the CJ.

In-laws just bought the Liberty with a diesel. Haven't seen/driven it yet. Maybe this weekend. I post my thoughts for those interested.

I drove a liberty on and off road at a Jeep 101 event the year they came out. I was fairly impressed. If you walk through the parking lot where I work (Federal facility), you will see quite a few of them. They get good "word-of-mouth" there.
I have a '99 wrangler I bought new and now have close to 100k on it. It has been very reliable and goes places my 4wd pickup couldn't. My Dad owned wagoneers from the late sixties trought early eighties and thought they were terrific vehicles.
I suppose its possible to go wrong with a jeep but it seems to me you can say that about any of them.

A civil engineer friend has the Liberty Diesel and loves it. The diesel engine is by Mercedes.

Drove the in-law's Liberty diesel this weekend. Only drove a few miles but was fairly impressed. My wife drove it quite a bit and liked it. It's a little small but the engine and turning radius were good. Hope to drive it more to get a better opinion.
