I'm new to the board and would like to ask a question. After comparing the case dimensions of the 338WM & the 358 Norma, it would seem that necking up the 338 would gain a little powder volume without sacrificing too much in seating depth. Has this been done before?

300HH

The 358 Norma Magnum is almost exactly the same thing. As a matter of fact, I believe you can make 358 Norma by simply sizing the neck of the 338 Win. Mag. up to 358 and shooting the final product. Shooting only fills the case out more fully to the 358 chamber with no other changes.

I haven't heard of it being done, but no doubt somebody has done it. IMHO the added expense of the custom reamer and dies would be a waste of money, because the performance difference would be insignifigant. If you want more poop out of a std length 358, then go with the 404 case, and you'll have 358 STA performance, as well as recoil. Then again, a 280 gr a-frame @ 2700 fps is a load I wouldn't mind using.

I think if you were to go to the trouble of having a 358 custom built, the only choice is a 358STA. Of course I might be a little biased. It's my number one deer round. It has the perfect case capacity to be used in a 24in barrel. 250grs at 3000fps easily.
Don't just be a survivor, be a competitor.

Sir
The 358 STA is certainly a good round but the 358 Norma isnt anything to laugh at. I have built more STA's than Norma's. Recoil is there with the STA and it is necessary to fireform brass for better accuracy. Both calibers feed well. I wonder how long before someone ask me to build a 358 Ultra mag or a 9.3 Ultra Mag ? Give either of the 35's a try as both will do about anything here in the states.
Small groups
Charlie Sisk

My partner has a 257WSM and another being built and that got me to thinking about a 358 WSM.Would you expect 35 Whelen performance in a short action or possibly better,Charlie?

I think maybe a little better. I have not tried this yet but it should make a good one. You could make this rifle short and light because you wont need a long barrel. I would guess Reloder 15 in a round like this. 22 inches should be plenty. Be one hell of an elk and bear round. Probably would get meat on both ends !
Small groups
Charlie Sisk

I suspect that the short magnums are going to be necked up and down.
Bet that there will be .338 short magnums not too far from now!
