i picked up a 2-7x33 leupold today for 99 bucks that's going on my .44...

what do you folks put on yours

leupold 1.5-5 on 1895 45-70

looking to put a fixed 4x.... OR a small varible in the 1-4 or 1.5-5.

I put a Pentax 3x9x40 on my .308 Marlin Express. It works great.

Leupold 2.5 scout.

Redfield TX-27 4x on a MR-7 in .280Rem.

Vintage Redfield 2 3/4x Widefield in NOS Weaver rings on a NOS Weaver base proudly mounted on my 1894CL in .32-20.

Shot it today using factory Ultramax 110gr RNFP. A hoot to shoot!

I now need to come up with a good load that will let me shoot it more...

I got too caught up in the low power variable thing. For me that doesn't work. I did load workup with a 2.5-8X Leupold on my guide gun which was pretty decent. Then, following the crowd, I stuck a 1.5-5X on it. I didn't like it. Couple years later I sold that, went back to irons. Then I missed optics so I got a 1.75-6X Leupold. That was a hair better but still not great. I sold both the rifle and the scope.

If I had it to do again, I'd use the 2.5-8X and stick with it.

I've done load workup for .38-55 and .45-70 "Cowboy" versions of the 336/1895 with a 3-9X aboard; I switched back to irons for hunting with both. Both shot under MOA with factory ammo as well as some handloads. Pretty bulky setup and the drop in the stock isn't right, but if i were to scope one of those again, I'd stick with something in that 2.5-8X, 3-9X, etc ballpark.

I had an 1894 in .357 and an 1894 cowboy .32 H&R mag. I shot both of those with a Leupold 2-7X RF special. That was ok other than the drop in the stock being excessive for scoped shooting.

I am a fixed power fanatic. When I found the 2 3/4X Redfield, I knew exactly where it was going.

It took me a while to find the old style Weaver low rings and base, but they are perfect for the 1894CL.

I get a great cheek-weld that is only a tad bit higher than the factory irons, plus it is light and still balances on the action.

1894CP .357 with a new model Weaver 1-3X20. My youngest daughter (8) took her first deer this past season with it at about 50 yards. I do agree that more power is nice for testing and bench work but it works fine for most .357 hunting applications.

44mag, 32-20CL, 25-20CL all with 1.5x6x32 Simmons Whitetail Expedition scopes. These are great scopes.
My 39 has a Nikon 2x7 rimfire

My 1894 44 Mag and 357 Mag wear Loopy 2.5X compacts. I just put a Burris Timberline fixed 4X on a Savage 99F and I'm impressed so far. It's not quite as small as the 2.5X but it's still very compact and I can't think of any reason that it wouldn't work as well on a Marlin. New from Opyics Planet for $149.00.

Like Hawken, I favor the scout models. One can operate the hammer with boxing gloves on.

On my 218B CL, I have a leupold varix3 1-4x20. On my 308mx, I've got a leupold varix2 3-9x40. On my 1894p 357 I have a Leupold varix3 1.75-6x32. Everything else I go irons mostly because its mostly for fun with everything else. Hunting with the scopes.

Ditto Ed, although mine is stuck in Leupold std bases, which Im about to change for a Weaver base and some Burris Zee rings.

My 1895SS and 444s both wear Leupold 2.5-8 scopes, one a VX-3 and one an older Vari-X III. (Oddly enough, the Vari-x is actually brighter than the VX-3. Go figure. I'm hanging on to that Vari-X) They add 15 minutes to each end of my hunting day and look good on the rifles. I keep thinking about a Zeiss, but somehow an American scope seems more "right" on a Marlin...

I prefer low power (1.5 to 7) in shorter length scopes. The leupold base and rings, two piece leupold base set-up and the weaver see-thru all work just fine.

The scope is usually on 2x or 3x power, rarely turn it up more. Norm is thick woods hunting, sometime snap shots posting on drives and even still hunting, all inside 100 yards.

As for scopes usually, Leupold 1.5x5, fixed 4x, and 2x7. Along with a couple Weaver fixed 4x scopes.

My 39a has a 2-7 Leupold on it...the 336 with a 24 in half mag. in .25-35 currently has a 3-9 Burris on it, but will be replaced with a Weaver 2.5 with a Lee dot, the .336 in .30-30 is a 24 inch barreled model with a half mag..it has a 4x Burris, my 1895 .45-70 has a Weaver 2.5 with a post....for the uses I have for lever guns these scopes suit me best...as time creeps up on me, scopes provide a more deadly shot ....animals for me must be killed as cleanly and quickly as possible...

so far, my vx1 2-7 has been the best thing i could have imagined for my marlin.

Has anyone tried a Leupold 2.5x20mm Ultralight? They weigh 6.5 oz and are 8 inches long.

Steve: Who carries them in Canada? All I can find here in Alberta are the VX line. Local shop won't even consider ordering anything FX. I would like to put one on my Marlin 1894. Should be perfect on a 44mag. They look like they were made for the Marlin leverguns, nice lines that won't add much bulk to a trim rifle.
Much as I dislike the idea of scoping a lever gun, I'm getting old.........sights are a bit blurry now and again and it isn't from the Glenfiddich.

I just put a Redfield Revolution 2-7x33 scope on my 336. I have only boresighted it so far. It seems to be really nice for the money and for the application. I mounted it with a Weaver 63b base and low Leupold rifleman rings.

Stave, Thanks for the info. I knew WS listed them in the cat but they never seem to have them in stock. I'll try Clay @ Prophet River as he is just few hours away. Go by there when I head to Cold Lake fishing.

That is, in my opinion, the perfect choice. A very close second is the Nikon of the same configuration.
