Curious what you think.
If I were retubing my '06 tomorrow, I'd probably go Whelen. But that has as much to do with the rest of my rifle battery as anything else. Plus the .35's do kick some butt <g>.
The CENTER will hold.

The great .270 Winchester of course!! Setting the standard since 1925.

I'd say 280 Ackley Improved, based on a LR bias.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

9,3x62.
In English think of it as a 36 Whelen Improved. 06 case, shoulder moved forward, 36 caliber. So you have an improved case, enough shoulder for easy headspace, great game bullets available (better than 35), and it's a factory caliber that you can find in the US in well stocked shops but also world wide.
The 30-06 is one of the greatest hunting rounds ever so as mentioned above it is the best use of the case. I'd have to give the 9,3x62 the best use other than the 30-06 itself and the 9,3x62 would win the most efficient and powerful commercial round available in the 30-06 case..................DJ

I'm with raybass.
I have all of them, except for the current day "wildcats" and the 8mm-06.
My favorite is probably the 35 Whelen, but could be the 338-06, but I also really like the 25-06, and the 280 is wonderful, the 270 is always accurate and effective, and of course the 30 caliber version is hard to beat. I'm so confused....I think I like them all.

The 30-06 is a tuff nut to crack in the way of improvement, even if you go .35-Whelen as a better choice for larger game. The 30-06 with a 220 grain bullet does wonders on bigger game and bears included.
If your honesly looking for a lighter kicking rifle for deer, antelope etc and to double up on predators or varmints, I would go with the 25-06 or even 6.5/06 as I did.

The .30-06 has never been improved, but I'll shoot a .270. No real interest in any of the others except perhaps the .25-06.

Is there a .17-06? If not, then I'll vote for the Whelen.

225 gr TSX, RL-15 59-60 grs (work up to that!), WLR primer, Remington brass and your bullet clipping along at 2700+. Elk, bear, deer and just about anything else that walks is in a serious bind.
