Now that I have your attention, I am on a quest to find any information I can about the stock carver that did my rifle. I know there has to be other owners out there. Have you seen any at gun shows??

Do you like it or not like it?? Just checkin'

Not my cup of tea, but I'll give him a B+ for originality...

No... I've never seen that style of carving before.

Very nice wood... and while I don't wish to insult you, you asked... so here is my honest opinion.

I can't say that carving does a lot for the quality of the wood. I would prefer the more French-style flourishes in carvings (it has a name, I just can't remember it at the moment)if that were my rifle.

That said, I believe carvings have to please the individual owner... and if you like it, then... well... you like it and the matter is settled.

However, like Mudhen wrote, it's "not my cup of tea", either. If it was my rifle, I'd prefer the rifle with just the factory checkering as opposed to the checkering AND those carvings.

I really dislike having to write negative comments... but remember, you asked for our opinions.

No clue on the carver, never seen anything like it before. With that said, I have to admit that I like it. Especially the fore end.

I kinda alike it but the angles of the photos make it hard to understand how it looks with the rifle as a whole. I can appreciate something like that on a modern rifle like a #1.

Saw some stocks with very similar carving at a little shop run by an older fellow in Llano maybe 10-12 years ago. Very interesting guy, with some fascinating rifles....Might inquire around Llano.

A bit much for my taste and I think it takes away from what looks like a couple of nice pieces of wood. Too busy but if you dig it that's all that matters. What caliber is it just for conversation sake?

Joe Sherrod is the only guy I'm aware of in Llano... I don't think this is his work. This is a Joe Sherrod gun:

Bingo!!!!

LonghornDoc---the older fellow's name was Leonard Storey and he was in business in Llano for many years. He sold these guns since the 70's or maybe earlier and I was only able to afford one a few years ago.He sold his personal collection as he was terminal with cancer. What a colorful gentleman he was!!!He always had a story! He ordered the Ruger's in the white and blued them. Temple Lide was the stock carver. The wood was ordered special with no checkering and all of them I have ever seen have had beautiful wood. His checkering is around 32 lines to the inch and that is what makes it so hard to photograph.Brownell made his checkering tools to order.

I'm so happy to have found someone that has seen this work because it gives me hope that I will find someone who owns one.

The caliber is 270.

Thanks guys!!Keep those opinions coming!! + or -

I would ask, do you like it? If so, that's what matters. When it comes to #1s, I'm more of the type that might embelish the metal first, leaving the wood more standard. Nothing wrong with starting with wood like you did.
