Looking at changing out my lever on my 1895 XLR with a DRC and was wondering how difficult it is to swap them out. Also considering removing the crossbolt safety and replacing it with a shunt, how difficult is that to accomplish?

Neither are very difficult.

The lever may require some filing on the plunger that keeps it closed to tune it to how hard/easy you would like for it to be to open. I've got mine where it won't drop open, but isn't too hard to operate.

I simply tightened the detent screw down to where the crossbolt would not operate. It's reversible in about 5 minutes. You just have to remove the buttstock to do the alteration.

So you have to remove the buttstock then tighten down that screw and it will render it inop?

Yep.

There's a screw on the left side of the action, facing to the rear (it's under the wood when the buttstock is on) That applies pressure to a detent and spring. I simply set the safety to "off" and tightened it until it would not move.

If I remember correctly, it is an allen-head screw.

Well I took the stock off and could not find that screw to disable my crossbolt safety. Any other ideas?

hmm. mine is right where Vic said it was. with the stock off, there should be a small hole on the left (somewhat) vertical surface where the stock and action mate.

there was an socket head set screw in there.

Thanks for the link, i'll take another look at it tonight and see what I can find that screw again.

OK, took the stock off and found that screw, got her tightened down and now the crossbolt safety is fully disabled. I was originally looking for something a little bigger with a phillips or common head which is why I missed that little allen head screw. Thanks for the assists guys.
