I am replacing a broken firing pin in my Ruger Mini 14. The replacement arrived and it came with a warning about protrusion length. Spec is 0.028 inch minimum to 0.038 inch maximum. The new firing pin protrudes 0.0635 inch. How should I go about trimming the protrusion length? I assume I need to maintain the radius of the pin as well. Correct?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A file and a good stone work wonders. A Dremel with a fine wheel if you are adventurous.

Follow T Lee's advice with the stones. Cut and try. Cut a little measure a lot! I would cut it to 35 thou then test fire.

My question is: how in heck did you get a firing pin for a Mini-14?? Those are restricted items..

Thanks guys. I'll be sure to measure twice and cut once. When cut to the correct length, the face needs to be rounded and polished, correct?

Numrich and MidwayUSA both sell firing pins for the Ruger Mini 14.

Didn't find it at Midway but I did see the Numrich pins.. Only reason they have a few is because they're used items.. Otherwise, Ruger will NOT sell those to anybody.. (according to them)..

THANK YOU! It worked out great. It took about one hour.

1. Using jeweler's files, filed tip to MAXIMUM length.

2. Rough in the rounded shape with the jeweler's files.

3. Using a stone, clean up all marks and round the tip by rolling the firing pin tip against the stone.

4. Polish to a smooth finish with 0000 steel wool. I thought of using a dremel with a wire wheel but doing it by hand was easy.

More than likely, they're Aftermarket.

[color:#3333FF]Brownells has em. $30.99

[color:#3333FF]Midway has em too. But they're out of stock. $29.99
