I came across a Waffenfabrik Steyr Mauser today that has been partially sporterized and rebarreled in 257 roberts. Can anyone shed any pertinent information on the Steyr Mausers? Thanks Les

BNZ coded. Depends on what time of the war. I have a BNZ 42 receiver that is supposedly of good steel, shoots fine in a BR. Just another K98, but pretty much a Steyr which is good. Steyr also had some rifles from conzentrationslager, they supervised slave labor on production. A whole separate production line IIRC.

I believe that Steyr made large ring Mauser 98 action military rifles for export between the end of WW1 and the Nazi incorporation of Austria into Germany, the Anschluss, in 03/1938. After 03/1938, I believe that production was shifted to support the Wehrmacht, so those weapons would have the 660 BNZ, BCD/BNZ, or BNZ production code for the original Steyr Works or the 42 BNZ production code for the Steyr K98s produced with slave labor at the Mauthausen Concentration Camp.

Several years ago, I had a 1920s vintage Chilian or Peruvian Mauser in 7x57 that was built at Steyr. It appeared to have the same quality of skilled workmanship that the FN and Oberndorf 'tween the Wars rifles exhibited.

Thanks Dave and 260, I had to pass on the Steyr due to other opportunities. The local Bass Pro clearance priced a Remington LVSF in 22-250 to just under 5 bills!!! I couldn't pass on that one. Now to figure out what to do with it. Les

My super ultra light weight .308 Win. on a Lawson Mountaineer light weight thumbhole stock is based on an M98 1912 Steyr mauser. Total package with scope, sling and full magazine is a whole 5 pounds even. I have another 1912 Steyr Mauser, also in .308 (stamped 7.62 NATO)still in full military dress that has a bad barrel and a rather beat up stock. No big deal as I bought it for the action to make into something.
As both are pre-WW2 at least the actions are quite smooth and feed very well. I would not hesitate buying another one should i find one at the right price.

PJgunner;

Don't mean to hijack this, but a 5 lb mauser is of some interest to me. Care to share the details of that project?

Also, I have one of these Steyrs and I think it has a two groove barrel.

I'm also having a 1912 steyr made into a lightweight 358win.

its been about a year and still not done. I know the guy can do it since he made a 4lb 338fed (rem 700). I doubt mine will be at the 5lb mark but hopefully it will be close.

Not anawful lot to say about the rifle. The action is a 1912 Steyr mauser with a well Swiss cheesed magazine. The barrel is 1 7/8" where it meets the face of the action and rapidly tapers down to 7/16" at the muzzle. The thumbhole stock, which has a blind magazine is from the Harry Lawson Company here in Tucson Arizona and is the very lightest version of that stock they make.
The magazine holds three rounds and one up the spout. Scope mounts are the lightweight Weaver type, the tall ones to place the scope, a Leupold 4X compact high enough to be able to see through it.
The thumbhole stock has had the barrel channel relieved and holes drilled in the butt area to remove weight. Barrel length is 19" and the overall length of the rifle is 40".
The stock is a lightweight tiger striped Maple stained to almost a black color with a rather glossy finish. Normally, I don't care for shiny stocks, but somehow, it seems right on this one.
If I ever get a proper digital camera and learn how to post pictures, I will. To be very honest, the rifle was an experiment that turned out very nice.

Paul B. I think you mis-measured your barrel as most large ring mauser receiver rings are in the neighborhood of 1.4" in diameter. Your measurement of 1 7/8" converted to decimals would be 1.875.
I know your barrel isn't larger in diameter than your action so I assume it was just a mis-measurement.

Rojelio

PS. Also the muzzle diameter seems awful thin. The 7/16 minus the .308 leaves only .1295 and divided by 2 for wall thickness would be .065 (rounded off). That's almost like a shotgun barrel.
