I shot a newly acquired 444 the first time last week. I tried the 265 gr. Hornady with H335, and the accuracy was promising. What really impressed me though was the slick feeding. It was much better than Marlins I have or had in .30-30, .35 Rem. and .45-70. Don't get me wrong, the others were acceptable. Has anyone else had the same experience? Is it just a lucky rifle, or is this common?

.

To me it seems as though the Marlins feed OK but not great. Then occasionally, we find one that feeds great....and sometime we find one that feeds poorly if at all. Just the luck of the draw.

The correct cartridge OAL is very important.

Never had a problem with mine...it needs to be resized fully, especially if your loads are hot, which many usually load them to max.. I don't and never have a problem with them feeding..

Bullet profile is also important.

Here's a few newer 444 bullets I've been looking at..only problem is the LEE aluminum mold..Not a big fan of these because correct pouring temps are usually too hard to maintain compared to a Lyman. If I get one it will be the 300 grainer, anyone else have one of these for some input?? TNX...FLEM

I love the Lee molds I just ordered another one today. The Double Cavity Bullet Mold - C430-310-RF is excellent too.

My "original issue" M444 fed fine with anything I ever tried in it, although that was limited to some factory 240s and two different reloads with 200gr "pistol" bullets: Speer SJHPs and XTPs.

Like most of the other Marlin leverguns I've fired, feeding was smooth and event free. Not quite as slick as my old M336SC in 35 Rem. but pretty darn close.

Then again, that SC had a good 20 years headstart on my 444, so it was well-polished by comparison?

Maybe the newer ones have changed but my earlier ones sucked..this new 300 grainer I'm looking at is a six cavity and screams nothing but headaches!! Probably will pass unless you can talk me out of it!! grin
