Okay i've been getting the V2 sighted in at 150 yards for the past 2 days, mainly just trying new ways of loading and so today i did a comparison of Hot Barrel VS Cooled down barrel @ 150 yards.

100gr Blackhorn209, .500" 250gr Thor, CCI 209Mag primers. Hot barrel, no stopping to let it cool down.


Same load but allowed a good 5 minute cool down between shots.

Repair pasty is 1.5" in diameter and so that group is a good deal under 1 1/2" @ 150 yards.


One more time on a cold barrel.

How's the recoil with the full bore Thors?

light and easy. Its normal load is 110gr but i was just experimenting with the cold weather today. Plan on trying 105gr next time as well.

Bigblock I have a quick question....if you lay your thumbhole Optima and your thumbhole Accura V2 side by side would you say that the stocks are identical in size and proportion or is the accura stock a little taller or longer etc...is the thumbhole area a little more open?

The Accuras stock is bigger and longer and the hole is actually bigger.

Im 6'3 and they both fit me real good, but i like the slimmer lines of the Optima the best and i feel it recoiled a lot less. I notice a pretty good difference in barrel jump between the 2 guns.

Are those Thor bullets better than the power belt bullets?

i agree with big block the thor bullet fit very well in every gun i tried them in and they seem to like the black horn 209 the only gun that i didnt try was the rem 700 ml and i dont know what bore size it is but the rem genisis shot the.502 really well all the thors i shot were 250 gr and iwill be using them this hunting season

Thats what I was wondering. Im only 5'9" and I dont have long arms. I know I really liked how the Accuras felt with the rubber coated stock and rubber grips but I would rather have a better fitting gun that is just as accurate. If they would just make an Accura with the Apex stock and give a few different length of pull options on those stocks I believe this gun would be just about perfect.
Out of curiousity which gun has more muzzle jump the Optima or the Accura? Which has more felt recoil with similar loads? Lastly do you notice one stock design to be more accurate than the other(thumbhole vs. standard)?

Yesterday i did some changes to this load. I used another powder measure that throws out normally 1.5 grains less than what the chart shows on the BH website. One other change, i brought along my timer, set it for 7 minutes and after each shot, hit the button, sat back and relaxed, when the timer reached 2 minutes i would reload and put my hearing muffs on, prime the gun and just wait for the timer to go off, hit the button to stop it from ringing, carefully got the gun set up on the bag and positioned onto the target and squeezed the trigger. Very tame recoil! That 250gr Thor with this 110gr load travels at 1,971 FPS average.

By doing this i was able to shrink my group to 7/8" center to center at 150 yards.





Now i had screwed up earlier and adjusted my scope down way to much and so i made some adjustments, reloaded after it cooled down and took one more shot at 150 yards to make sure it was dead on.


Getting itchy and excited i said to heck with it! I want one more to MAKE sure. Cooled down, reloaded, fired.

I think you have a pretty good chance of tipping something over with that group! Son in law took a great deer last year at 160 with open sights. It is possible!

LOL yeah i have a new Optima thumbhole that i want to use with the 250gr Powerbelt Aerolite.

BIGBLOCK You said the other day that the Optima had less felt recoil than the Accura and that there was a noticable difference in barrel jump between the two. Were you using the same powder loads and bullets in both guns when you determined this? Which gun has more muzzle jump the Accura or the Optima? I would have thought the Accura being heavier and a more solid stock would have less felt recoil and less muzzle jump.

nuguy, the ACCURA has a good deal of barrel jump. Its soft recoil wise with the butt pad, but the barrel jump is there. It has that long goose neck set up and so im sure thats affecting the barrel jump. The optima has a much shorter length neck on it and the recoil pushes straight back into your shoulder.

I remember watching Oneil outside and he was shooting a v2 with 150gr american pioneer sticks and a 270gr powerbelt platinum. It jumped so badly that it knocked his hat clear off his head LOL.

That group is pretty darn impressive out of a CVA. I bought one a few years back and couldn't get it to shoot better than minute-of-stop sign. I spent more on bullets and powder, trying to get it to shoot than I did on the gun. Found that the bore was oversized and varied .018 down the whole length! I'm not bashing, just sharing what happened. I got a new ML and now, I am shooting groups like that as well! All is good in my ML world now. Good shootin!

Bigblock: Did you modify the breechplug to .035 to use the BH209? I was going to do that but now I see CVA has a delivery of new BH plugs for later this month. Anyway, maybe the current Accura V2 stock plug will work ok with BH as long as I clean in between shots? Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

When i first got it, i was shooting a factory plug. The only adjustment i had made was by adjusting my head space so the primers fit tight, rather than loose and being allowed to blow back into the frame and lose all the head. This IMO is what has been causing hang fires for others in their CVA's with BH209. You lose all your gas and heat, thats whats going to happen.

The flash channel is 3mm and so keep it clean with a drill bit spun by your fingers every 6 shots and accuracy will stay superb.

I ended up modding my flash channel to a larger 5/32" size as i am mainly a target shooter but still, after i take my 3 shots with one load, the barrel gets cooled down, plug cleaned and when ready, i test out a new load.

Would that load do for elk,bear and moose?

fudge ya it would. I use the 250gr on everything. I just need something to step in front of my barrel during hunting season. No problems on deer. Elk, bear and moose i still need to test. Most likely never moose though.

what new ML did you buy?

i have the new CVA Optima .50cal with the thumbhole stock. It will be shooting 250gr Powerbelt Aerolites this year though. I have to test them out on game and see how they do.

If this question was for me, I got a Rem 700ML and shoot a 250gr Hornady SST over 100gr of loose 777. It groups wonderfully for me. The only thing that would make it better, is if were in stainless! Kind of a pain to clean, but worth it.

I want a new muzzleloader(have the T/C Blackdiamond XR now for use in Wa.)..wanting something I can run BH and 209's for eastern states or Wa during modern. I'm looking at the CVA Accura V2 or the Bonecollector. cant make up my mind.
any thoughts?? open to others ML's as well....

Check out the Optima. I honestly think highly of it. Stainless steel, thumbhole or non thumbhole and under $300 depending what you color package you want. Both of mine came with 2lb triggers from the factory and so i can;t complain about that LOL.

also does the optima come with the bullet guiding muzzle?

both produce close to the same groups. Its really hard to determine which is most accurate LOL. The Optima prefers lower powder charges while the accurate likes to eat up 110+gr loads of Blackhorn to match the Optima's accuracy.

whats the diffrence between the 2..I see the V2 has 1" longer barrel and is a little more $$

v2 has the quick release breech plug " remove with your fingers, no tools needed" Adjustable trigger that barely adjusts the pull " 2lbs and under at most times" rubber grip panels, stock and forearm are also coated with rubber for extra grip.

The Optima doesnt have any kind of rubber except for the recoil pad of course. It too had the Quick release breech plug, lighter weight, triggers that normally break around 2lbs so you really wont notice much difference between the 2 in that department.

I like the Optima best as its slimmer and doesnt have the boat paddle shape of the rear stock like the Accura, nor does it have the long goose neck wrist area.

You really can't go wrong with either, it will just come down to which fits your build the best and what you feel is more comfortable in your hands.

The Wolf is actually CVA's number 1 selling gun they make. In 2009, TC sold over 39,000 long guns total " muzzle loaders / centerfire" CVA sold more Wolfs that year than TC did throughout their entire line up. They are hot little sellers and just because the price is cheap, a lot think, ahhhh its a throw away gun after i finish for the year. They are under dogs i will tell you that. They do run heavier triggers as most young shooters start off with these due to the price and the " what if i dont like muzzleloading?" Factor.

This is my Wolf a handful of days ago @ 100 yards with 100gr Blackhorn209, CCI 209M primers, .500" 250gr Thor conical with open sights. First 3 shots were high so i adjusted downward.

This is a 2" group with open sights and thats pretty good considering im one blind sucker LOL. I did have it scoped but i need it open sights to be legal in colorado.


No special tricks either, not even allowing the barrel to cool down.


With a scope and 100gr BH209, CCI 209M primers, 250gr Powerbelt Aerolites @ 100 yards. 3 shot group

what do you not like or what if any problems are with the electra?

well for one its not legal in colorado and two, it uses a battery. Its just one of those deals that a few years down the road, something could go out with the electronics and there wont be any replacement parts for it.

any idea how well or if it will shot like your wolf,V2,optima? only reason I ask is I can get a brand new one,scope,base and rings,sling out the the door for less the $200.00

Man i honestly dont know what to tell you. The price is right but the function just doesnt feel right to me.

Hell i know of a cva wolf " new model" thats been shot under 50 times and comes with the konus 3-9x40 scope set up. Hes asking $160 if you are interested. It has the blue barrel/black stock.

What would be a good functional scope and ring set for a CVA Wolf? She will use it some here in TX (just out to 100 yd's) with the scope and then use it in CO. w/o. Don't need the best but the best value. As always thanks............

Elk for example, 385 or 410 hornady great plains, 370gr tc maxiball will be some bullets to try out.

Does that rifle have the older 1:32 twist or the new 1:28 twist?

Ahhhh very good! When i had my CVA Hunterbolt, it really liked my 360gr Lee Minies that i cast. I have 35 of them for $20 shipped if you're interested in trying them out.

What kind of powder charge?

i had been shooting 70gr BH209. I did try them with 90gr american pioneer loose and 100gr pioneer super sticks and they shot great.
