I don't know. As I noted, it could be the the individual binoculars, it could be my 62 year old eyes, or it could be just the way it is. Whatever, the 9.5s really performed for me.

My Leica 8X42 Geovids blow the Minoxs out of the water....optically. But, the Minox binoculars, especially at $300, offer the hunter a LOT of optics for the dollar. Frankly, I'm pretty darned impressed.

I bought these binoculars from Doug, but I have also sent them back. I could not seem to get rid of a cloudy/milky margin around the field of view (Steve/DZ referred to this as a "bluish" haze in his review, but he figured out how to eliminate it.)

My other good pair of binoculars are Leica 8x32BA, that just weeks ago came back from the factory for a service. In side by side tests, the Minox had better optical performance--I could see more detail in both good and poor light with the Minox. Since the Leica's are $800-900 binocular, that speaks well for the Minox. I would certainly have kept them if not for the haze issue. It may well be that someone with without glasses, or with different glasses, might have none of the problem.

By the way, Doug said just send them back. What more can you ask for?

Hmm. I hope mine doesn't have this haze.
I don't wear glasses btw.

Read it again--He was having problems with the nose pieces on his glasses that seemed to cause(somehow) the "crescent" image.

A fellow Campfire member, RecoilRob, has a similar thread on the Optics section. The thread is entitled Minox 9.5x42 vs. Zeiss 10x40 - results .

Rob is a careful observer and his test results were almost precisely identical to mine. It was interesting reading his test procedures and remembering coming to the same conclusions.

I though that this might be of interest because it shows another personality and another point of view.

I have to shove the binoc deep in my eye sockets <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> to reduce the effect, but it's still there.

After some more playing it turns out the blue-ish haze along the bottom edge is light reflection from the objective end.
I can make it disappear by blocking the light from the sky using my hand.

Any recommendations for a similarly priced pair of binocs?

I noticed a similar thing with my DCF SP's when looking normally you don't see it during regular use, but if you turn your eye and focus on the edge then the blueish haze appears, but only when your eye turns and looks for the edge. doesn't bother me

A Buddies daughter just bought a pair. We were comparing them this weekend in sunlight. opticly they are great. but to be truthful i didnt see a difference in mid day light against the Nikon Monarchs. I did like the individual focus though. All things considered, the Minox were far better built. I guess that is the difference between China Nikon and Germany minox LOL
The blue haze at the edges... i saw it too, but the reason why is the huge eye relief. Fold down the rubber eye cups and problem solved. On my Lieca geovids i need to keep the eye cups in slightly as well.

Doug, our friend at cameralandny, just posted a link for the tripod adaptor that he sells for binoculars. The binocular/tripod adaptor sells for $9.99 plus shipping. Obviously, with 9.5 power binoculars, there are times when being able to use a tripod would be very, very nice (think antelope hunting).
