Does anyone know anything about the GNR family of cartridges.

I know Gary Reeder is the creator of the GNR wildcats and he has being doing it longer than J.D. Jones. I recently came across a 338 GNR barrel at a gun show for a great price, $200, but I didn't know the performance of the round. I'm guessing/hoping that this is an unusual enough wildlcat that I'll be able able to find the dealer at the next show in Oct. but would like to know a little about the round.

Anyone at the Fire know anything about the 338 GNR?

It is based on the 405 Win case necked down to 338. Just a little faster than the similar .338JDJ that is based on the .444 Marlin case. No factory ammo..load yer own stuff. I would guess it to be about the same as a 338/06 at killin stuff.

There is a custom ammo manufacturer named Andy Rowe who will load any of Reeder's cartridges. Look at Reeder Custom Guns web site for a link to Rowe, and for info about the cartridge.

If you ever get up to Flagstaff, you can pop into the Pistol Parlor and talk to Gary yourself. He has a retail shop as well as a custom shop.

So I'm hearing and seeing everything from 2100 to 2500 fps with a 200 grn bullit, which seems to be a wide spread. Any idea the recoil outta a 14 inch G2? Maybe compared to a 375 JDJ or 45-70?

Never shot one myself. Why don't you go to Reeder's web site, click on "Ask Gary Reeder" and see what he says about it.

If it kicks too much for you (I'm sure it does for me, but I have arthritis in my hands), Reeder makes a real good muzzle brake and will add it for a reasonable price. Get a 2" brake and you can shoot it as a carbine if it's still too stout for handgun use.

There is a pretty good rundown on his website about what the cartridges are and the details

From his website:

The 338 GNR is one of my favorite. I've used this one countless times in Africa and in Australia on 600 to 800 pound critters. In Australia the feral donkeys, which are the size of a large mule, fall to one shot almost every time. It is formed from 405 Winchester brass by simply necking it down. This one will put a 210 gr. bullet our at 2400 fps. The 260 gr. Partition does extremely well on elk size critters.
