I hear tell drinking heavily might make the wait easier....

Sorry for the delay. Had a detail to complete. I use wad cut from mil carton. Diameter of patched slugis .436. Naked slug is .430 and btw it is easy to get 100 grains in the case.

Well it'll be hard to tell anything much until you get those cases fireformed, but I don't think you're gonna get along well with much over 95 grs of that 2f. But we'll be looking forward to your results when the thing gets her.

Hell, at this point, I only loaded the one case to get a feel for it. EVERYTHING is open right now. Being that I intend it as a hunting rifle, I'd be tickled pink to put 10 rounds into 8" at 200. Minute of any critter I'd want to kill. NO intentions of shooting match so I don't need to feel anal right outta da box.

I get just as "anal" over hunting loads as I do match loads. The 8 inch at 200 yds thing is alright, I suppose so long as the round you're about to touch off isn't the one that goes to the outside of the group, throw in a 10 mph crosswind, or worse yet a quartering wind.....Or a tweeny wiggle from a smitchy of buckfever... Keep in mind that that bottle neck increases pressure and velocity over a straight wall case, and that's why so many that shoot the bottle necks get along well with the various 1 f's or just enough 2f to make it just above the junction of the neck when the first wad is seated. I can relate tho. I've got a 150 rounds loaded for my 44-77 that Lucinda couldn't find yesterday, but we know it was in the wood shop a month ago....we saw it there.

I expect better, but for starters that would suffice. The neck on a 44/90 is LOOONNG!! Even the 490 gr would seat so deep it would even look funny. The round shown has .375 seating for the slug and it STILL sticks out a mile. Nice bore riding nose!

You might want to look into a traditional sharps/remington creedmoor design bullet for that. Something about 1.3 inches long, .430 diameter before patching. When you get the right powder and bullet combo that cartridge can really shoot well. The recoil from your rifle will be pretty managable. I thought long and hard before finalizing my order on the 44-77, it was a hard choice between the 2 44's.

Looking at original specs, HUNTING ammo came in these combos-450gr PP or 500 gr ppslug, either 90 0r 100 grain charge. LR Match ammo was 520 grain and 105 grain. I don't have the specs on the pitch so I think the 490 is about right for a baseline slug.

So what does Sharpsguy have to say about a good starting load? Being a lazyass myself, I'd see what he and Rancho have to say and go from there as I have ZERO patience!

I'm not going to feed the pizzing match in that "NRA is a joke" thread under the Campfire, but somebody posted a list of scores and equipment at a major Creedmoor match, and the only 3f in evidence was in a .45-70 load. All the bigger guns, mostly .45-90s, used 1 or 1.5f, the most common powder being Swiss 1.5. That's what I use almost exclusively in the .45-70, .40-82, and .45-90. Works great for me, so no reason to change.

Paul, I don't use FFFG in ANY ctg rifle, only my Lancaster flinter. I have a fair amount of FFG so I always try to use what I have most of on hand. If it works, I drive on,if it don't I grab some FG. Simple.

Yeah, it is simple. My comment was in response to Swampy's astute advice to use triple F. Paul

Otter I still think it might be good for you to look into Jamisons 45-90 brass. They really went all out this year and brought a long list of bpcr brass into their line up, at the request of bpcr shooters. I think it's a good thing to support a quality manufacturer like that with our business if possible.
