I like two hunt small game a day or two a year with my Dads Remington Model 4 rolling block 22. He shot it alot with shorts and the chamber is worn so shells swell on the bottom but with standard velocity loads its worn bore shoots much better than my eyes see. It must of been one of the last ones made. When I was a boy I could hit 20ga shells on end at 40 yards almost always.
And for deer I take Gramps 38WCF on a sunny day and have killed a few deer with that. Its bore is lightly pitted but it will still shoot a 1 1/4 group with the marbles peep at 75 yards. I am always amazed at how it knocks them down with just a gentle boom and shove to the shoulder.

I will be deer hunting with a Remington model 14 in 35 Remington. I like using it when shots will likely be under 100 yards and might need to be made quickly. It is fast, accurate, points like a quail gun and is just fun to hunt with.

US Model of 1917 Eddystone. It was being passed around the family until it found it's home with me some 20 years ago.

Ill second the Rem model 14 in 35 Rem.
I'd take my dads.
Topped off with the 2.5x Lyman Alasken.
Death to deer at short range.
Saw my dad do it over and over.

A picture from September, My pre-war Sauer drilling, 16x16 ( 65mm) /8x57JR with my first ever white tailed ptarmigan on top of a mountain in British Columbia. The 8x57 barrel slung under the shot tubes was a comfort considering how many big piles of grizzly crap my dog and I encountered! The old short chambered 16 ga. and the fiber wad #6 shells still did the job they were designed to do almost 90 years ago.

If I had to go nostalgic, I'd go for a Remington Rolling Block in 7X57mm. This was my first center fire rifle (purchased in 1957 by mail order from Golden Gate Firearms for $7.95 + $3.50 shipping - my, haven't times changed?). I occasionally dig it out and it will do 4" groups at 100 yards, if I do my part.

castnblast,

That old Sauer is one of the most desireable and effective all around guns ever created.

for now I have custom Arisaka Type 38 carbine in 6.5x50mm that
I will use this year.

I'll be using my old (1949) A5 Sweet Sixteen, as always for grouse, dove, and quail. I am building a small ring 98 in 7X57 for my grandson, and I'll have to try it on a deer. The old 1956 Model 94 in thutty-thutty will probably get aired out, and the Colt Sauer in 06 always feels nice when it's cycling rounds. I would also like to take a couple of deer with some hand loads in the AR. So many choices...so little hunting seasons.

For birds and small game, I'll be taking my Mom's 20gauge-full choke, Model 1200 Winchester. It seems a fitting tribute to her.

For deer, I'll carry a well worn Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. I really don't know why I strayed away from it for so many years.

Thanks, Tom

This afternoon, I took my BRNO Model 1 .22 rifle out for a short squirrel hunt. The old girl is beautifully built and still quite accurate. We made meat too.

Picked this one up last week so it will be in the rotation this year. Utica, NY made (1940s) .30-30 Win Savage M219. Trigger pull could use a tune-up but still shoots well enough with factory iron sights to hit something the size of a deer's heart at 100 yds.

I didn't get to use my Lefever 12 on birds this year, but I've been thinking of trying my 32-20 Bisley on coyotes in the brush.
I'm also going to try to get my great-grandfather's old 35 Win SLR up and barking again - maybe some coyote calling will be involved.

Calhoun,

That is a beautiful old 99. That is my favorite 99 configuration, being lightweight and short. I had two of them in 30-30 but stupidly got rid of them. I doubled my money on the first one. The second one had a bent barrel. It still grouped fine but there was not enough windage adjustment in the peep sight to print them on the paper at 100 yards. I kick myself for not straightening the barrel and keeping it to hunt with.

This year I have a 30-30 Marlin 336SC made in 1951 with Ballard rifling. Trouble is it is not drilled for a scope, and I just can't see open sights well enough, late enough in the day. I want to mount a scope on it but am having a hard time deciding to drill it. I have an old 3x Weaver that would be perfect on the old rifle in Weaver mounts.

Another rifle that presses my nostalgia button is my Ruger #1A in 7x57. It is not that old, being made in 1975, but the cartridge is plenty old, and what a sweet rifle! It wears a great old Weaver K4 that works as well as any scope I ever owned. That one is definitely going out this year. In fact, it has already killed a deer this year in the early doe season.

One old rifle I would like to own and hunt with someday is a Savage 99 in 22 High Power. A friend has one and it shoots really, REALLY well. If it can kill tigers, it can kill deer. wink

My 336C (1971) came w/ factory scope. But if it had not been d&t'd I would be tempted to mount a tang, receiver or ghost ring sight.

I have a Williams 5D on it but I just can't see through it at prime time, let alone see the front bead.
