I am considering buying a Marlin model 1895 45-70 that was made in the 1990s. It has the safety which I know many people hate. Many liked the old way of just having the chamber loaded and the hammer on half (or is it quarter) cock. Then when it is time to fire the hammer was cocked the rest of the way and the trigger is pulled. I am used to using safeties on my bolt action rifles and shotguns so I am not sure why the safety on the Marlin lever action is such a big issue. Can't you just have the hammer on full cock and the safety on and then when it is time to fire take the safety off and pull the trigger? Can these safeties be disabled easily? Thanks, Rufous.

Can't you just have the hammer on full cock and the safety on and then when it is time to fire take the safety off and pull the trigger? You can. Can these safeties be disabled easily? There are several ways, I simply removed the buttstock and tightened down on the spring/detent until the safety would not move. I have used guns with external hammers since the very late '60s, and am used to using the half-cock. Using the safety usually resulted in a very disconcerting and non-productive "click".

Vic, I found your earlier post with the Bear Tooth Bullets link discussing the safety disabling method. Why did using the safety result in a click? Do you just mean it is noisy to take the safety off? Is it quieter to fully cock the hammer back? Cocking the hammer on my Ruger Bisley (single action revolver) is fairly noisy.

I do the same, remove the butt stock, tighten screw, reattach butt stock.
When I die I hope I don't start voting democrat.

I grew up using the hammer at half cock and really did not like the idea of the cross bolt on the Marlin. I was going to buy a safety delete but figured this was as easy and cheaper. Provided it's loaded I do always get a boom with the trigger pull.

I replaced the safety with a safety delete that has the saddle ring attached. This way you get rid of the safety and add a saddle ring for looks and also some function of use.

I just use Clyde's safety replacment on all my lawyer Marlins. Cowboy action shooters, using a Marlin, are mostly in the replace safety with blank crowd. Nothing louder than a click when the clock is running. One occurance like that and you'll find a shooter looking for a replacement blank. Most of my Marlins are pre-safety, but the newer ones have the blank. DF

I was thinking of either tightening the saftey,or the o-ring method on my 1895m,but then realized it would be nice to be able to use the safe when cycling the live rounds throught the magazine to unload. I just use the half cock notch when hunting.

I'm able to back the live rounds out the magazine by depressing the loading gate. Well, it works on my Marlin, but not my Winchester M94, which doesn't have the safety. I wished I could, saves looking for them in the grass at the end of the day.

I unload my 1895G and 336 by depressing the load gate and popping rounds out of it, much safer.

Guess I'm an oddball, but I've always managed to unload my levers (without safety)....and NOT shoot myself or others.
