270win bolt face be used for a 6.5x55 swede?

Never heard any problems, 270, 30-06 all one in the same and everything I have heard, YES, compatible as is, for a 6.5x55. There may be some exceptions.

What action do you have in mind?

I have been informed by some guys who tried to rebarrel some push-feed .30-06/.270 actions that some 6.5x55 brass didn't quite fit. The only rifles I've rebarreled to 6.5x55 have been Mauser actions, and there has been no problem.

It would be simple for a competent gunsmith to open up the bolt-face of, say, a Remington 700 just enough to accomodate any 6.5x55 brass.

The Swede is actually .480" and the 30-06 family is .473". Many American ammo companies use the .473", European brass will be .480. So maybe yes maybe no. I also found that the European brass had a slightly thicker rim. IE Norma Lapua and RWS.

+1. In my limited experience, Mausers are not a problem, either with the bolt face or feeding from the magazine. I would expect that some minor adjustments may (or may not) be needed on the bolt face and/or extractor in a push feed action, depending on the maker.

Thanks guys for the ansswers and your patients with the questions. It has not been an easy search sinch no one is getting in the 6.5, even Gander Mountain who carries the Howa does not have any in their stash, or even have a UPC code for one so they would have to get it special from Legacy, Cabelas have Vanguards for 379.00 and Vanquard II for 449.00 in 270Win. So that is that is why I asked again, since the Howa would be about 650.00 special order. I always wanted a 7x57 and that would/will just as bad except for the Ruger I think has it in the 1 or 77 International.

The rim of the 270 Winchester is 0.473" and the rim of the 6.5X55mm Swede is 0.480". Not a big difference, but it might cause some inference as the case slips behind the extractor.

Yes, esp if you use American or PMC brass. (might be same thing!)

Maybe the European brass is bigger, but the American stuff I have seen and used seems to be .473, to the point that I need to use the .270/.30-06 shell holders for reloading or re-priming.

Remington chambered a 6.5x55 in the Classic, I can just about guarantee the bolt was standard .473 long action.

I will guarantee I will check it next time I see it!

If you are a rifle loony, I won't ask you why you don't go for a .260, it uses the standard .473 bolt face.

Depends on short or long action. Short action then perhaps 260. Long action then 6.5X55. The 6.5X55 will do anything the 260 will and more. Kinda like the 308 30-06 debate.

Sycamore I had a classic also and agree. True the specs are larger but typically works w/o mods in many actions. That said, brass does vary among brand as above mentioned. Recall someone - perhaps Seafire who talked about the 'fit' of various brass in Swede, esp. in an M70 IIRC. Thinking that was a PF under discussion, but perhaps a 'claw' model.

If you go to the trouble of building as JB said, set up for Any/All brass as a Saami factory rifle will do, yet I'd likely run either Lapua or WW brass in handloads.

If you are struggling Bob, do this:

Pop an Aderall, grab a Ruger 77 in 6.5 Creedmoor, the sporter Hawkeye, if desired for handling and a tad less weight, feel free to have the bbl shortened to 22-24" as some came 24, some 26, but you can choose what YOU like.

Run factory 120/140 amax for paper and coyotes, and 120 GMX ammo for anything larger. The 140 amax and 129 SST load will do fine on deer but avoid shoulders or hind end shots to max penetration and minimize meat damage.

Swede Performance!!!! Headache over!!! Now go buy the rifle/ammo and shoot sub MOA and perhaps 1/2 MOA out the box if you do your part. You won't be disappointed.

Lapua brass is THE brass to use in the 6.5x55. Winny brass wouldn't even chamber in my Tikka, the shoulders needed bumped back.

I like my Swede, but why build one? Just get a 260, or better yet, the 6.5-284.

I had a swede built on a 700 action, I dont recall having any work done on the bolt face.

I have a Ruger and only use Lapua brass now,after a few years of using Win/Rem trying to get the rifle to shoot up to it's repuation. For Factory ammo,Norma is good stuff!I figured my problem was the chamber and had no problem with the bolt face.It just wants Euro brass...

+1, Norma is THE way for Factory Swede and Lapua is THE brass to beat

Run a Euro round, ...don't overlook who made it and mfg's the best quality and spec for a round that is NOT based on a USA case.

In a Sako AV in 6.5X55 the Norma and Lapua brass was the best. Remington, Winchester were not near as good.
