I'm looking to get a new .308 Win and I did a search and nothing like this came up. Which rifle would give you the best quality for under $600? I'll be using this for deer and prehaps elk hunting.

Yep, I've got two pretty nice used rifles I picked up for less than $600. A model 700. 270 win that's a half inch rifle with most loads, and a m77. 338 federal that shot better than a half inch with the first load I tried. Keep your eyes on the classifieds.

I was thinking "new". As in what's on the market today. But "used" doesn't bother me either.

You'll likely get better quality buying used. I know you said $600, but here's what I got for $700:

I think a guy could be picky and come up with a clean M77,M70, or M700 clean and in nice shape under $600 in 30-06 but you will look a long time for the same in 308 Winchester. Just my 2 cts worth Magnum Man

Try www.whittakerguns.com. They have several new Rugers, Rem. SPS, Marlins, etc. for less than $600. Also a good selection of used.

I love my vanguards and they shoot good. I have no experience with the new model Vanguard that came out this year, but that is the route that I would go. I would first off look for a used SubMoa model. After that, I would look at brand new Vanguard and have enough money left to upgrade the trigger if you felt it was necessary.

At a gunshow here in Gillette over the weekend, one fella had about a dozen used Remington 700's. He had what he claimed was a first year production Model 700 in .308 for $425. It wasnt perfect, but it was in fine shape for a hunter. Not really marked up but not new in the box. Most of them were less than $500. So those deals are definately around. They will be in Rock Springs soon, if you decide you want to try and look him up.

Define quality..

Wood and blued, best that's possible?

Synthetic, best shooter possible?

I'd look at the Savage 11's in 308, they'll run you in the low $400's and are typically screaming accurate and with an easily adjustable trigger. Spend a bit more money on some Krylon paint and have some fun decorating it to your taste. Put the other $150 towards a good scope, I think a Leupold VX-II in 3-9x40 is running $240 at Cabela's now. Looking under $700 before rings/bases and tax for the package.

The local WalMart sells a Savage Accutrigger package gun for $397. Toss the scope and add something nice and you are good to go.

I have a Sako AV in .280 cal with beautiful wood that will go for $600 (icluding Sako rings). I would also include a Leupold Vari-X II 3x9 for a total package for $750. I can't imagine a better rifle for under a grand.

I just bought a new model Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 and I am really impressed with how much it has been improved from the first generation model. I bought one first model and got another on a trade. They were good values and dependable, but Nikon obviously listened to the complaints. The new model has fast focus, finger adjustable resettable windage and elevation adjustments, and much finer glass. They actually spec out as better than the Buckmasters, which I suspect will be upgraded within a few months.

For under $600..Definitely the Vanguard.I managed to get a Sub MOA(30-06) for $400 and I had extra scopes and it is nothing but sweet and I own a pre '64 Win Mod 70/Ruger 77 and Rem 700...

My only complaint about most of the new rifles is lack of iron sights....

People will tell you it is nothing but a Howa..Not true according to Craig Boddington:

Weatherby Vanguards may use Howa actions, but the rifles are built to Weatherby specs. Chamberings are not the same, barrels are not the same, stocks are not the same. Alsoand this is very unusual for a factory rifle in this price rangeeach Vanguard is accompanied by a test target (with a stated load), meeting an accuracy guarantee
