My wife never liked them, but we now have a male and a female. They are very good watch dogs with those big radar ears. Ours are not too yappy or snappy, but they know when someone is coming to the house. She lets them sleep in the bed around her perpetual cold feet.

When I was little we had a half fox terrier half chihuahua named Jimmy. We also had neighbors with a doberman. They would bark at each other through the fence. One day Jimmy got out the door and made a B line for Dudley the doberman. Dudley snapped him up and started chewing on him. We all grabbed him and wrestled him to the ground. We pried Jimmy out of his mouth and brought him to the vet. He was torn up. He survived but had bare patches where the scars were all over. I'm convinced Dudley would have gotten him down if I didn't get there.

I am semi-okay with small dogs, as long as they are friendly. I went to a Super Bowl party once at a friend's house, and his Cheehuas were as friendly as they could be. I sit down on the couch and one of them, races for the couch, jumps up, climbs up my chest and tried to lick my face off.
I had a neighbor in CA who did have one that was friendly, some sort of small poodle mix, and that dog had the most annoying, loud, high pitched bark I'd ever heard. No way I could keep that dog, it would drive me crazy.
