Just bought a used 30AS, and I want to put a compact 1x4 scope, you know the ones with the 20mm objective.

What rings and bases are best for a lowest mount scenario?

Thanks

My set up may not be the lowest but I prefer the Weaver base with Millett Angle Loc rings. I have several 20mm scopes set up with these. The Weaver base places the scope high enough when using low rings so that the fold down rear sight on the Marlins or the Marbles flat top folding do not interfere with my vision . The Angle Loc rings do not move under heavy recoil. When bore sighting it is easy to adjust the Angle locs for Windage, allowing you to keep your reticule centered. This is not a significant advantage with Marlin lever action rifles but the Winchester Angle Ejects are drilled on a slight angle to favor a right hand shooter and a left hand shooter can sometimes run out of windage with certain scopes.

Set on 1X the front sight will be a ghost in your vision but I have not found this to be a problem.

I have used the Warne Base as well as the Weaver 1 Piece base. Weaver bases I believe are aluminum except for the Green package I think that one is steel. I use the Leupold QRW rings if I want to be able to take the scope off and just use the sights or the rifle is a dual purpose like CAS. By the way I've got a nice 1-4x20 Leupold for sale if you're interesed pm me

I have Leupold's "one piece base" and "low rings" on my 336CS. I can't tell you whats "the best" but this works great for me! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

My best advice is the Leupold 1 piece base and their low rings. Not the cheapest rig but its rock solid and the windage adjustment in the base is useful sometimes.

I have the same setup on my 336 as both NewYorkHunter2 and Double30 ... and they are correct ... the Leupold 1 piece base and low rings put my scope w/ a 32mm objective so close to the folded down rear sight that you can hardly get a dollar bill between the two ... it's perfect in my opinion, for this rifle ...

I went the Leverscout route. No need for hammer spurs and I've been very pleased with the results.

I just put Talley bases and low rings on my 336 with the 1.5x5 Leupold. Fits me just right.

I like Marshall Stanton's idea about using a modified Weaver base and the QRW rings of your choice. That way, you can mount a Lyman receiver sight with the quick release and swap back and forth between peep sight and scope pretty easily. Check this out on Marshall's 444 Marlin articles in the tech notes section at www.beartoothbullets.com. I have a Leupold 2-7x33 Vari-X II shotgun scope on my 336SC in 307 and will soon do that same on my 336SD in 356.

All three of my Marlins sport Warne 'Maxima' Quick Detach rings and bases. That way I can plink with the iron sights or use the glass for more serious work.
