My '57 Texan prefers 150's and my 336SDG prefers 170's.

Most of the animals I've taken with my 336 have been with 150gr core-lok't's but I started casting 170gr fpgc's for it a while back and I'm content to use them from now on.

My Marlin shoot well no matter the bullet weight. I tend to shoot the 160 grain Hornady Leverevolution ammo. It works very well!

That's the way to teach them, old06. He'll never forget that.

just got a used 336 for Christmas from a good friend of mine. he said he likes 150 winny silvertips but lately we've been using federal 170 powerpoints. not sure how they group but they sure have some thump. he shot a doe at about 40 yds in the neck and it LIQUEFIED the neck, lots of internal bleeding but almost none on the ground, no big deal as she dropped on the spot.

I am a believer in the .30-30, just "discovered" it this year, but I'll have one in my hands next year if I am still healthy and around to hunt.

Well, hoping you are. My next .30-30 is liable to be a Thompson Center pistol.

In my Single Shot Topper 22" barrel, The 170 grain Sierra FN with WW case and WLR primer and 36.3 grains of LeverEvolution propellant clocked 2308fps on my Chrony. I am switching from the Barnes 130 grain XBT. Cheaper and consistently more accurate. Haven't hunted with the new 170 grain loading yet.

In my Marlin 24" half magzine, I usually shoot WW 150 Silvertip or hollowpoints....it is scoped...in my 94 carbine, I had a tough time getting the peep sight low enough to shoot 150's well..so on a whim, I bought 170 gr. Horn..and used Re15 because I have 2 pounds and don't use it in anything else...In the 94 this load shoots like a dream...talk about a lucky choice....

I typically go for accurasy above any other factors related to killing an animal.
150 gr core-lokt for Glenfield carbine
170 grain Power Point for Winchester carbine
Both carbines have toppled dozens of animals with no problems.

Factory load is hands down the Remington 170 gr HP. Accurate in ever gun I have shot it in. My pet reload is Hornady 170 gr FP over 31.0 gr IMR 3031. Andy

I shot those this past season and am definitely a believer. I bought two boxes before the season and am down to around six rounds left in the first box after zeroing and hunting.
I notice that the depth of the hollow cavity isn't very uniform. Some appear to be nearly filled with lead.
I opened the second box and nearly all of them appear to be partially filled to one extent or the other. I suppose the opening in the copper jacket is enough to get the ball rolling though.
Just picked up a '94 Winchester, circa 1974 and am looking forward to getting the iron sights zeroed on it. I have a Marlin 336 that I set up with an old Bushnell 4x, but the '94 will run with irons.

Vic: One of my .30-30's IS a Contender 14" with a Weaver 2x. It is a hoot to shoot! I've loaded all sorts of .30 cal bullets over the years from 110 to 180's. You can seat them out a little farther so they almost touch the lands. I can't think of any combination of components that was 'inaccurate'. I think my rifles are a little envious. Also, got a pretty decent bear with a 10" Contender,DRT. You won't be sorry if you get one.

150 grain SilverTip by Winchester. It makes a wide wound channel every time.
