Finally gave in to the Big Medicine 1895 .405! After a real long time considering, thinking, shopping, I found a great deal (state of mind) on a ANIB 1895. Cannot wait to get the 1895!
Whitetail and Bear season are concurrent this year here!

Hey Mike You're going to have some fun working up the loads for that 95. May I suggest a recoil pad and a reciever sight will be most appropriate. Keep an eye peeled for Hornady's Blem sale for bulk quanities of 300 jacketed slugs. I've been working with cast bullets for my 95. I had Mountain Molds make a 350 grain GC'd mold for me and found a 300 grain mold from NEI on Ebay. A fellow on another site wanted to try some of the 350s in Africa in his original 95. he found they shoot through Kudu, Eland and Warthogs, no matter if they are front to back, back to front, left to right, bones, etc. Another fellow is using them for moose this fall in Canada and a fellow in Sweden is using them for Elk/Moose. I'll have plenty of data on this bullet prior to my hunt in Africa next year. No I'm not selling them these guys wanted to try cast bullets before buying a mold or having a mold made. Jim

Excellent info. I am looking forward to working the .405 cartridge. What recoil pad do you have? I have tried the Galco leather/velcro slip on with a 45/70 that worked well. A replacement pad would be ideal.
I was debating on the take-down model, but the deal on this one was pretty good. I have looked the 1895 .405 over many times in the past few years, always remained on the 'nice to have' list, this one seemed to line up at the right time!

Mike I've forgotten the name of the recoil pad. It's 3/4 inch, brown in color and solid. I cannot encourage you enough to find a reciever site for the 95, the buckhorn is pretty useless. I found a Redfield site for mine, brand new, made sometime in the 1950s on Ebay. It's solid steel built like Fort Knox. Jim

Jim I may just do that. Buffalo Arms has a version of the Lyman model 21 or model 38 for the 1895, based on the price $200, it must be good! If you don't mind me asking , what was the ebay price?
Mike

Like your taste in rifles and cartridges. When you get started reloading for it you may want to try h4895, reloder 15, or if you can find any reloder 12. For a strictly hunting bullet I don't think they get any better than Northforks 300gr ss. Limbsavers 10112 recoil pad is a real close fit, and will only require a little sanding on one side of the comb and on the heel. The 38 sight from Buffalo arms is nice, but a pain to install on account of you'll have to make a metric threaded screw for the front . If you carry the rifle for hunting you'll have to keep close watch on the sight settings as they will change some from the rifle being carried around.
the most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to. www.historicshooting.com

Mike Mike I got a deal considering the current reproductions. I paid $80.00 plus shipping for my Redfield. Any Redfield sight that fits the Winchester 94, 1886 will work. Jim

Picked up the .405 Sunday, as expected, excellent rifle. All ready to the range, needed a quick going over.
Hope to carve time out in the next few weeks for a practice round or two before deer/bear season in late November.
Still researching sight options. Will post my range results.
