I need some load data on 140 gr SST 264 win mag. What powders work best, any info would be appreciated.

Retumbo worked great with 140 Nosler Accubonds. 1st group measured 1/2" or better. I can't remember the charge weight.

Thanks addicted for info! I recently had my 7mm weatherby Vanguard rechambered to 264 win mag. I used to own a 264 win mag and had a nice load using 140 gr XLC ahead of IMR 7828 getting 3,200 fps and shot 1/2 groups. I let my friend use it and it got stolen

Hodgdon's max is 63.5 gr of Retumbo I have been able to work up to that with both the 140 gr Accubond and Partition can't see why you couldn't work up the 140 gr SST. Magnum is another powder that works well for some guys Ramshot's max is 65.3 gr. I worked up to 65 gr with both Nosler's but didn't get the accuracy that Retumbo gives me but your gun may.
Just noticed Ramshot says you can go up to 68.3 gr of Magnum with the 140 gr Hornady A Max.

Magnum and Retumbo are the way to go if you are chasing maximum velocity with 140's.
They were not around when I was working with my previous barrel in 264. I settled for about 3050 fps with 140's and H1000.
I have some 140's on the shelf along with some Magnum and Retumbo. On the "to-do" list is finding out what they will do from my new 27 inch barrel.

Thanks for the information. Recently purchased a box of HMS Trophy Gold extended range 140 gr hpbt. I used my chrony and I only got 2,760 fps. Accuracy was 1" group but those velocity are terrible, especially with a 26" barrel. I was disappointed because I saw those videos were there shooting game all the way to 900 yds. I bought some US 869 going to see if I can do a lot better then that.

For the 140 SST Hornady lists these powders as gving the best velocities: H870 (fastest), IMR7828, IMR4831, and IMR 4350. Also AA 8700. I'd agree on the Retumbo, but they don't list any load data.

With your 26" barrel you should be able to get more speed than mine.

Good luck with the 869. I understand it is very close in burn rate to H870.
I tried to use H870 in my 26 inch Winchester barrel. But it was too slow to make decent velocity in my barrel. Even when I passed the maximum recommended charge weight by several grains, I could not get over 3100 fps.
I just found some notes from May 2006 using Magnum and a CCI 250 primer with the Sierra 140 gr spitzer boat tail in a 26 inch barrel.
65.0 gr --2858 fps 66.0 gr --2898 fps 67.0 gr --2951 fps 68.0 gr --2991 fps 69.5 gr --3043 fps 70.0 gr --3038 fps 70.5 gr --3080 fps 71.0 gr --3150 fps 71.5 gr --3087 fps 72.0 gr --3155 fps 72.5 gr --3133 fps 73.0 gr --3188, 3153, 3133 fps
ETA: In reviewing the earlier posts, I see that my loads are significantly over those listed as maximum. This barrel always required over maximum charges to make velocity.
In 2006 we were pretty much flying by the seat of our pants with any of the new powders in the 264. There was very little published data available.

My 6.5-284 will push 140 VLD's to 3,000, but the accuracy node is at 2,950. That's not too far behind the .264 WM except in grains of powder burned, and then it's way behind.

A 264 with the right powder will push 140's to 3200 fps from a 26 inch tube. The big problem is, the right powder is often different from one barrel to another. The 264 is, by far, the most persnickety (technical term there) cartridge I have ever worked with.
Then, just when you think you have worked up the ultimate load, you go out on a rather warm day to shoot a few and find they show pressure signs.
A bullet with a short bearing surface helps. I imagine the VLD must meet that criteria. I also moly plate all of my bullets for the 264. Actually, I moly plate every thing I shoot.
From what many posters on these boards have told us, the 257 Wea is easier to work with and capable of higher velocities with the same bullet weight. I find that claim hard to believe, but then I have never loaded for the 1/4 bee.

IMR-7828 would be my starting point. I found RS magnum to be spikey (another techy word) in my current .264. This baffled me since it is such a slow burner in most cartridges. 7828 came to pressure gradually with no surprises. Accuracy was good with both.

Good old H-570 in the 264 is tops and has been for many moons for launching 140's. The case is almost it's own powder measure fill er up hear the crunch when you seat and go shoot! Too bad you younger fellars haven't been able to try it!!Also good in the 7 and 300 mags with heavy pills..My old standby has been 140gr Partitions 73.5 grs for a consistent 3175-3190 out of a 26"pipe which translates to a gnat's azz over 1 MOA..Plenty good enough for knocking a speed goat on it's behind about as far as you can see!! ..really.

I could not get speed out of Retumbo or Ramshot Magnum with a 130 gr Swift Scirocco, it did not seem to matter how much I dropped, I could not get faster than 3150 out of my 26" Pre 64 model 70. I gave Accurate Magpro a try, and hit 3250 with good accuracy and no pressure signs. I know it doesn't help that much with 140 gr work up, but Magpro might be a good powder to try.
