There is a big push that looks pretty good for Ohio allowing any cartridge allowed in handguns currently, to be used in rifles next year for deer season. I have been researching and researching to try and find the perfect round to build. The current handgun regs are anything .357 diameter or larger, and a straight walled case. Basically, the 357, 44, 444, 45/70, 460 S&W, etc.

I am wanting a bolt action rifle, so that really limits some of the rimmed cartridges. Does anyone know of any other cartridges or wildcats I might not be thinking of? I didn't want to do a 458, as I would rather have something with not so much recoil, but maybe a little more range. The 450 Marlin would also be pretty easy in a bolt action. I was trying to think if there was any wildcats based off of the WSM or WSSM cases, kind of like the cartridges created for Indiana. But they must be straight walled.

Any help is appreciated.

There are a pair of Siamese mausers chambered for .45-70 in the classified section. Also an option for you, is the Remington 788 in .44 Magnum, but you could do the same with a Ruger 77/44. I don't think the .44 magnum gives you "long range" though.

In the book Precision Shooting to 1000 Yards, some guys reenacted a scenario that involved a guy shooting a 45-90 (I believe) and knocking an indian off a horse at around 1000 yards, open sights and all. Not that you're trying to do that, but I think CrimsonTide was right on the money with the 45-70. 45-90s and 45-120s surely have a bit of a boot smile

Yeah that's the one! Pretty cool stuff. They had that rear sight adjusted so much that their cheeks were like 3 inches off the stock!

.405 Winchester might qualify, and you can run things pretty fast out of a Ruger #1.

Another case with a minimal shoulder is the 9.3x74R, but I don't know if it would fly...

I realize you mentioned wanting a bolt action rifle, but I can't help but think a Marlin Guide Gun would save a lot of frustration.

Best of luck.

Get over the bolt action fascination that therein find success. High Walls, Ruger #1, NEF, Marlin CB or -kaff- Guide Guns, etc. etc. Big hammer, lots of range if you figure out where to point it.

If you just have to have a bolt action the 77/44 works well with 300 grain bullets. RN paper patch gives a BC of about .240, MV of ~1600 fps. +9" at 100 yards, zero at 200 with remaining velocity about 1160 fps.
