Well once again my Windows software died before my cheap PC hardware. So - finally, I am going linux whole hog. I should have done it 20 years ago.

Who else is using penguin power here at the fire?

I use it on my Non Mac PC's I love Ubuntu, and I am pretty sure Scott F is still a convert also. One of the most user friendly Linux versions out there. Les

Wish I had the nerve to try it, but my capacity for the learning of a new system at this point in time is in serious doubt.

Terry, I can promise that you would be very comfortable within about 5 minutes, tis very simple, just like windows, and best of all, no games. Heck, I could teach you to use it like you use windows in about 1/2 and hour on the phone. Les

It really is easy Terry. install it and let it do it's thing. Works better than Windows ever dreamed.

And, the greatest thing to a Scotsman, it is all free.

I have used Ubuntu on and off for several years, easy to learn, easy to install. Just downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 last week and have it running from inside Windows on this computer, works great. T Lee, if you go to their site, download the iso and burn it to disc you can boot to the CD and run it from there without installing it at all, great way to find out if you like it or not.

It is dead simple. It is even able to see all my old windows files and is saving them to my USB drive as we speak. All that was wrong with my system was a corrupted password file, but that is all it takes to total a Windows system.

Scott mentioned he was an Ubuntu user to me, which is why I happened to have had a copy ready to go.

Scott Rocks!

I use it on my desktop at home. I still use my little Samsung laptop for downloading audio books because Linux was kicking my ass when it came to my i-pod.

I heard that! I've been using ubuntu linux on two computers, one is a machine whose Windows backup image got erased on the hard drive (I refuse to purchase a copy of DOS) and the other is my younger daughter's notebook.

My issue with changing over entirely is that I'm running a 17-node mixed-wired-wireless network in the house with 5 of the nodes cameras. That stuff would work perfectly with the right drivers but I have to go find them, and load them, and test them. My legacy data will run with the free linux applications found, which is great, after I relearn word processing, relearn the spreadsheet, etc.

BUT, what about the learning curve on....everything? And will QuickLoad run? Will half of the software that I have run? Who knows? Guaranteed some of the stuff I have won't run so I'll always be supporting two operating systems. I just don't know if I want to dedicate so much time changing over the entire deal. Then yesterday the clincher...needed to help my daughter with something she could not do on her system and she answered my "do you like ubuntu?" question with: "not really..."

so that's why I've been seeing her at the family Windows computer lately...

Hell, I'm still running XP on every other computer on the network so that tells a lot...

I installed it on a spare desktop I had. Ubuntu works just fine, but it won't run some of the programs that I really need, like Quicken. Yes, it has alternative financial programs, but then I'd have to learn THEM. It does have Open Office and a version of Firefox, but...

And it's that "but" that will keep me a Windows user.

I had switched to Open Office long ago, and given up on IE too, so that part isn't abig change. I look forward to what I won't have to do, all the Windows maintenance, or buying new hardware because Windows goes all crap ware on me.

You will get regular updates but they download and install in background and you hardly notice.
