I have always shot 4 fletchings (Feathers). Not at 90 degrees but at 75 and 105. I like this setup because you don't have to pay any attention to the location of the cock feather, and you have a lots of stabilization.

I did for 20+ years, for the exact same resons you mention. At that time I shot a heavy arrow, alumimum, and fingers. I think that the four feathers helped.

Tried 4-fletch before, didn't spend a lot of time with them have since returned to 3-5" left wing feathers fletched with a good bit of helical.

I'm a 4 fletch shooter too. And they all have to be the same color. Looks like a big ass tracer going away from you, and if you see any wiggle at the tail in flight, its time to check the set-up.

I've only used 4 fletch for the last 15 years smile Don't see me changing anytime soon, and I catch hell for it at 3D shoots all the time.

I shoot 4 fletch off of the longbow or when shooting carbons with large broadheads. They are more visible during their flight. My cedar and fir shafts are three fletched with 5 1/2 banana fletching and are just as visible though.

I have before, ran 4-4" and really liked them. Running 3-5" now as i had someone else put them together, but really liked the look of the 4s.

I shoot four fletch for a reason. True Flight actually recommends shooting 4 fletch if you are shooting big broadheads and 4 inch feathers. If you shoot the 5.5 then three is sufficient. If you shoot field points or expendables then three fletch would be fine. My bow will only allow a 4 inch length feather before getting into the WB. I shoot big broadheads, so I shoot 4 inch feathers. I want as much stabilizing as possible. I also like heavy front of center points that cause your feathers to have more influence on stabilizing and better penetration. Just my reasoning..good luck

used to shoot 4 5 inch fletch set at 90 degrees from my longbow when hunting
White tails from a tree stand in brushy areas where shots less than 20 yds. The 4 fletch seemed to help straighten out arrow flight very quickly for the close shots.
