My last weekend for rabbit hunting this season as we are taking the scout troop to Ft. Bragg next weekend. Got 2. Too hot here in Central NC today. 7 of us took 14 last weekend, best hunt in years.
Who did good this year?

the coyotes have all but destroyed our local rabbit population or at least here on my farm.never was a big rabbit hunter but when they were all gone i seemed to miss it more.

And why do think coyotes are the cause?
I'm off to the Annual Rabbit Hunt and Poker Match this weekend.
The abundance of rabbits is not terribly critical to having a good time however.
Save an elk, shoot a cow.

seems the only logical answer.a few years ago we had a plentiful rabbit population then we started seeing more and more coyotes and less rabbits.when the rabbit population dropped then they started coming into the barn area looking for a meal. good luck on your rabbit hunt this weekend.

Disease and weather can have effects on rabbits as large or larger than coyotes. Might be 'yotes, might be foxes, might be raptors, disease or bad weather at just the right moments.

I had a 1 or 2 great days rabbit hunting this year, though I generally don't take more than 1 or 2 per hunt. Took a few very long .22 shots and connected well, which is what keeps me happy. Rabbit ends next Wednesday here. Crows, groundhogs and turkey will keep me busy all spring.

Rabbit hunting, in my locale is really poor[except in town]. If you don't have a dog, it's almost a futile effort. Been that way for years. More coyotes, clean farming, rduction in habitat, have all cut into rabbits. Those of you that have good hunting, be grateful.

Any(all) the scat you see around here will have rabbit fur in it.

We have terrific fluctuations in the cottontail population here, without any other change in the area. Last year we had cottontails all over the place; this year there are very few.
I assume that when the population goes way up, bunnies are closer together and communicate disease more readily. With the reduction in food supply per bunny, their immune systems get weakened and they die off even more readily. Always seem to come back, tho. We'll see.
