Anybody have one of these? Got one coming next week.

[Linked Image]

700 AAC-SD

Just a SPS Tactical .308 20" but wears a 1-10" twist and threaded/capped muzzle. Gonna have to order another McMillan, so I'm sorting through the pattern list. Leaning Rem Varmint again and 3.5-10x40 Mark4. May swing a Wyatt's mag box if needed, as those Remington 308 throats are loooong.

Old man has the standard 1-12" SPS Tactical 20" in one of the old ebony-tip VLS handles. 50gr of RL17 pushes the 200gr Gameking BT at 2600 with W-W cases. I shot steel with it the other day and the 400yd plate was swinging damn hard for a little .308win. Not my normal thing, but it looks like a handy rig for the truck, box-blinds, and similar stuff.

Ya gonna get the suppressor, too? I'm thinking about selling some stuff to get one for .22LR and another for .223 or .308.

Brother has one on his Colt 6920 and enjoys popping varmints without earpro.

I could certainly see doing the supressor when funds allow. Shooting centerfire without earplugs would be sweet.

I got one a couple of weeks ago. Got to the range with it once. Hornady 168gr. AMAX did a 3 shot group of .311 at 100yds.
Federal Premium 165 gr. Sierra Gamekings did a 3 shot group of .673 at 100 yds. Several other rounds were respectable but not quite as good. Scope is a Leupold FXII 4x33 in Talley Lightweight Lows.

What scope are you going with JPro?

Also just reread your Dad's favorite load; that's smoking fast for a 200 gr./20-in. bbl. I haven't even chronoed anything through my LTR.

The 110 TAP load is sub-MOA and just barely nudges you. Liken the idea of a suppressor to reduce the recoil still more...it could be a 400 yard death ray with a 6x42 LR. Kick like a .22 Hornet.

I've got a 30mm-tube Leupold 3.5-10x40 that will go on top.

RL17 is impressive in the 308 with heavy bullets, even with the short barrel. My father had a tough time believing me when I told him that 200's could make that kind of speed. Recoil is noticeable but not excessive in a 9-10lb rifle. The 130gr TTSX at 3,000fps makes good sense for the other end of the spectrum. I've yet to fire any of the 110's, but don't doubt they would be easy on the shoulder.

Primarily a hunting rifle. I would like to bump it up to a Leupold FXIII 6x42 though when funds allow.

The long throat may not be an issue. I have a Linda Lovelace 700 XCR compact tactical that jumps 168 CC Noslers .15" and it shoots tight groups. Back in March I shot five groups at 300 yards and the average was less than .6 MOA.

Not to be a crank, but if your going to restock it why pay the premium for the AAC-SD? To get the 10 Twist?

It was maybe $30-40 more than the standard SPS-T with slower twist and non-threaded muzzle, so it wasn't much of a premium. I bedded it to a McMillan Remington Varmint stock that I had on my 223AI and found a used A3 to put on that rifle.

That is why I wanted it. Liked the idea of the threaded muzzle but have no real drive to put anything on it.

Have already removed the X-Mark Trigger and replaced it with an old style factory solid remington trigger group.

I understand. I thought they were much more expensive than an sps.

What do you all think about the Remington Hunter for one of these?

It's supposedly pretty varmint-ish, although I've never owned one. I hear that a #5 is about as small as a guy wants to go, so I don't see why a Rem Varm contour would be out of place.

Those guns look awesome.
But after buying a supressor for the AR, well it wasn't as quiet as I'd hoped. Took the crack out of it, but it is better than the regular muzzle blast and sound on the ears.

I tried four or five bullets in this rifle, but didn't go to great depths to tweak each load. I swapped in an older style stainless Remington trigger, a McMillan Varmint stock, and changed from a Mk4 3.5-10 to a 5-20 Trijicon.

I really wanted to try the 168gr Ballistic Tip after seeing a photo of the sectioned bullet. My load wound up being 46.3gr of Varget, moly coated bullets at 2.815", W-W virgin cases, and CCI 200 primers. That load is basically straight off the Varget can with a 0.3gr bump for the moly coating. I get 2,630fps and it went sub-MOA at 100yds and 200yds. I popped a few to make sure that my JBM chart and scope elevation knob were agreeing out the 300-400 yds and then went hunting. I feel like there is more room to tweak the load but just didn't have time.

I have a wyatt's extended mag box that I was considering having installed, as the jump to the lands with most spitzer bullets is considerable. A 2.95" OAL would grant me a good bit more flexibility regarding seating depth. I also want to tinker some more with the 208gr A-max and it really needs the mag box room. Running a few loads for a RL17 work-up had them stacking in there sub-MOA, even with varying powder charges. It may like this bullet but I'd only want to run it if I can fit them in the magazine. I picked up a stainless Holland-style brake for cheap on Snipershide just to give it a rip. It took just a bit of fitting and really takes the bit out of the 200gr+ loads. It is loud, so I rarely use it.

I also tried TAC with the 150gr Ballistic Tip and got sub-MOA results. 47gr got me about 2,750fps with no problems. I bought some 130gr TTSX bullets to try with that powder but wound up loading them for my father's SPS-T (1-12" twist). We load 49 grains for a bit over 2,900fps.

I plan to stick with the moly 168gr BT in my rifle, but may still do the longer mag box if range work indicates that the longer OAL offers better accuracy.

To make a long story longer, it's not an overly picky rifle, it's very easy and steady to use in a hunting blind, and it's a good rig for whitetails and hogs at medium range. I'm running a 225yd zero and don't really need to spin a turret until I'm out past 325yds. Some might view it more as a playtoy but I bought it for a hunting rifle.
