Ive been patterning my Mossberg 935 with factory AccuMag Ultifull choke and havent been too excited about what Im seeing at 40 yards. It will work at 40 but it gets a lot worse beyond 40. Im not a long range turkey shooter but have killed a few at 45 steps that I thought were 40, hence why Id like a little extra assurance.

Ive looked at all the various choke tubes and shells. It seems to me that 2 likely combinations exist Hevi shot or some derivative and a 0.680-0.690 choke tube, and lead/plated lead and a 0.675-0.680 tube. Im partial to the Winchester Supreme high vel shells. I started using them (3, #5) when they appeared with great success. I bought the 935 this past fall and am just now getting around to patterning. Im still not used to turkey season arriving in March..

My initial goal is to find a choke that works well with the Winchester Supreme 3.5, #5s because I have several boxes of them. Im not opposed to Hevi-shot but think I have a lot more work to get it working in the timeframe Im working with. Id like to try both but have the Winchester as my default.

Anyone have any good shell/choke ideas for the 835/935?

My uncle has an 835 and uses the Kick's Gobbling Thunder with the same load you have listed (Win Supremes 3.5"). He's been very happy with it. I don't know what type of pattern he's getting for certain, but says it's a lot better than factory.

Good luck in whatever you end up with!!

Thanks Heeler.

I just ordered a Kicks 0.680 and a Carlson 0.675 for my 935. I'm going to try Hevi 6's and Win Supreme 5's in the Carlson and the Win 5's in the Kicks. One of those combinations should work well.

It has to better than my current 0.695 Mossberg tube. Plus I'm only looking for 45 yard patterns. I never plan to shoot past 40 but turkeys are always farther than they look.

The Star Dot .676 is a very good choke in that gun. The Pure Gold .670 is a close second.

The Star Dot is no longer made, but Colonial Arms made them and they still make an 835/935 choke that is nearly identical to the star dot. Even looks like one. I read where a guy bought one of the Colonial Arms 835 chokes and compared it to his SD. The choke looked the same, had the same internal design, same size ports, just a couple less, and the ED was .679. That's pretty close as SDs came in .676-.682, but most seem to be .676.

Hevi is the easiest way to gain yardage, even with the choke you have. It takes alittle testing to get the best lead setup and what works for an identical gun, may not work as well in yours. That said, It's not too hard to find a lead/choke combo that will make 45yds.

Good Luck

Try some of the Federal FC HW #7s with your factory full choke. I think you'll be amazed at how well the Federal HTL shot patterns out of that Flight Control wad. I contacted Federal when they re-introduced the FC wad. The Technician I spoke with said anything from the factory Modified to the factory Full choke should yeild excellent results.

Will do.

I'm gearing up for a full blown patterning session next weekend. Nothing like waiting until the last minute....
