The SS 10X42s I had were extremely durable and return to perfect zero everytime. I'm thinking the Leopold will do the same hopefully.

I love the SS scopes, just wished they could have shaved some weight off of the 6x. Looks like it specs out the same as their 3x9. I also thought a 20 ounce scope would be to much on a light rifle but the 3x9 hangs just fine on a Tikka T3. I cannot honestly say I notice the 8oz gain over the last scope but I surely appreciate the confidence that perfect adjustments and durability bring, well worth an 8oz penalty.
DNZ also offers a 20moa base for Remingtons in 1" and 30mm setups. Hard to beat 2oz for a base and ring set up with elevation built in.

I may look at the SS 10x for the 243, after I took its Varix III 3.5-10 Tactical off to put on a Kimber Montana.

I have used 6x Leupolds 6x36 and 6x Burris for years. Deer and antelope look awful damn small at 375 yds plus, seems like a guy would be handicapping himself for LR use. Understand about poor field of view on running targets with a 10x at close ranges is the trade off worth it? Magnum Man

6x isn't for dedicated LR guns. It's a good choice for lighter weight general hunting rifles with the ability to use out to med-long range.

Yesterday I was shooting rocks at 450-500 yards (not real LR) with a 280 and my Leupy set on 6, and missing just didn't happen. It's a real eye opener... Made me want a straight 6x really badly.

WTF? cat got everybody's tongue over a simple question? Magnum Man Uuhhh....sorry. New definitions of "long range" change preconveived notions of when a scope is "enough"...I must not have done enough hunting in the west;or I'm going about it the wrong way, despite having killed deer, elk and antelope between 400 and 500 yards. Must be the country I hunt, but I have had to look long and hard for an animal I want at much past 400 when the time came to shoot.I do pass up a lot... Since I've killed all three to 400-500 with a fixed 4X, I am not gonna break a sweat with a 6X.. But like FormD says, if you're going to stretch way past that routinely, a few more X's won't hurt....you can see more hair around the reticle. I'm going to the range this afternoon and stretch a 6X to 600. But that isn't "long range"
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

A 6x scope has allowed me to smack targets under a foot in diameter beyond 1000 and 1100 yards, but at that range a bit more magnification is welcome. Out to 1000 yards on 12" diameter targets (like the vitals of a deer), while something like a 10X wouldn't hurt, 6x is enough for my needs. Within 700 yards, or so, a 6x scope is plenty, and is my preference. I would much prefer a 6x for anything under 100 yards.

I have found that in timed situations 1x per 100 yards is sufficient, however 1.5x per 100 yards is visually more comforting.
Everything is a trade off. More power means more target definition. It also means more weight, more expense, being compromised up close, and usually more mechanical failures.
Good fixed 6's like the Leupold 6x36 and 6x42 are the cheapest, lightest way to usability across most hunting ranges and situations with an acceptable level of durability and reliability. Add turrets and they become solid 600+/- yard scopes.

On game I don't shoot as far as you guys do. As much as I like a straight 6x ,I'll still take a Vari X 3 2.5 x 8 any day of the week, twice on Sundays and the weight penalty be damned. Glad you guys are good enuf to getter'done. Magnum Man

Magnum Man... Got any 6x36 or 6x42s you want to trade for a Vari X III 2.5-8x36 that's been professionally coated? I'm not too fond of how it fits on my long action 280.

I had a similar epiphany this past September. Scenarshooter has quite a few rifles with fixed 10X scopes. I thought that seemed too much of a good thing for certain situations. So, while I was in WY hunting pronghorn I set my variable at 10X and hunted. I had no problems at all that were scope related and now think for that type of hunting a fixed 10X is the berries! Using trumped thinking on this one for me.

No doubt! I would probably opt for 6x over 10x, in a fixed power, only because of the timber I walk through from time to time, but 10x is undoubtedly great as well. As evident from scenar's pics, there is no hamstringing with a 10x

Tanner, if you're not happy with the 2.5-8's fit on your long action, the 6x36 won't do you any favors, as it is dimensionally similar. A long action screams 6x42.

The 6x36 has 5.9" tube length, the 6x42 has 5.4" tube length.
