I would appreciate help in determining a value on this pre 64 model 70. 243 featherweight.
Other than a pad being added, the only other thing I can find that keeps it from looking new to me is a small scratch on the stock that should show up in the following photos. It looks almost unfired. I believe it was made in 1961.
Thanks for the help.

VERY nice condition. But the pad hurts the value. I'd say $800ish

I have a Fwt 243 from '58 that I got for $700 with a 1.5-4.5 Weaver on top just about a month ago,..and it has the original butt plate. Yours is a bit nicer so I'd say it's worth about $750-$800

Check the LOP. If it was a plastic buttplate gun, there is a chance that the gun stock wasnt cut and getting a new plate is easy.

RAS,
What should factory lop be? I'll go measure what it is with the pad.

No, measure from the trigger to the center end of the wood. I forgot the measurements. Be right back.

12-7/8" to end of stock.
1-1/16" thick pad.
13-15/16" with pad.

Was factory wood longer than 12-7/8" ?

Yes, therefore I believe it was cut.

It's a dead giveaway that a pre-64 stock has been cut/shortened when the distance between the comb and heel is as short as it is on this rifle. Good looking rifle though.

Oh well. The next owner will have to not mind a pad I guess.
Thanks for the help.

IT WILL DO 900 STANDING ON ITS HEAD OR ILL EAT THE ASS OUT OF A WOODCHUCK. CHECK COMPLETED AUCTIONS ON GUNBROKER, YOU SEE BUBBA SPECIALS DOING $800, THAT THING IS IMMACULATE IN A FAIRLY UNSEEN CONIGURATION, I SAY IT IS WORTH $1000, AND IT WOULD NOT TAKE LONG TO SELL IT.

+1 even with all the CAPS ON!!!!!!!! If he's looking to sell it, I'm sure it would be gone pretty fast for $1,000.00

well, I hope for the OP's sake you're right, but the cut and pad completely destroys the value to a M70 collector.

It becomes a shooter....and a damn nice one...or a candidate for a replacement stock, with which it is worth maybe $900 in my estimation.

what kind of a sick dog would cut a beautiful stock like that to put a pad on a freaking .243 to begin with? sigh.

That's some great news Raybass. Now just find the right plastic butt plate and you are in business....

If it ain't cut it wil do all the money. You don't need a butt plate.

Picture with the pad still on. I have taken the pad off and put a plastic buttplate on which is 4 7/8" in heigth. That leaves the wood proud about an 1/8" at the bottom. [Linked Image]
