I have a short action winchester in a 308 that ive decided to rebarrel. The gun will be used for deer, antelope, and maybe a cow elk. I know the 308 would work fine for any of them just looking for something alittle different. Lets here your ideas I am a reloader so wildcat round ideas can be said as well

If I had an SA M70 laying around, I'd be looking awfully hard at a .284 (or one of the wildcats base upon it), 6mm or 6mm AI.
This is a shooting forum, there is no place here for logic.

Laker, I had a Winchester Model 70 FWT in 243 re-barreled and worked to run the 284 Winchester. I said, "The 284 Winchester." The Model 70 short action will allow for the 284 Win to be loaded to a 3.000+ COAL, AND with a little tweaking of the magazine box feed lips it'll feed flawlessly. The 284 and the Model 70 SA go together...perfectly.

I had a 284 built on one. If I was to do it again I would go straight 7X57. The CRF M70 was a beast to make feed and you won't ever miss the 150 fps; luckily my smith did it.
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

But, if you went 7X wouldn't you need a long action? Side note, as cool as the 284 is or 284 based rounds to date I've never found one that would feed in a manner which I....find acceptable. That's not to say that one can't get a round fed in them. Dober

Mark,
I too have seen and heard of feeding issues with the 284 case...
However (and I say this with all due respect)mine feeds extremely well, not a hiccup whatsoever. As a matter of fact, when one cycles rounds through the guts of my rig the response has been, "...it feeds really smoothly.." Granted, mine is a push feed and not CRF.
