Oh no, there goes Tokyo, go-go Godzilla!

4 Runners have a nasty reputation for outliving their owners... my bro-in-law has a '98 with over 300k on it. you can't kill 'em if you try!

It's barely broken in! First major service is at 100K, run you around $2K for the works, but you'll be good to go for another 100K. Well worth the money!

I'd grab it if I were you...

As far as the Runner: I'm on my second in a row. First one, a '97, I did 110K miles trouble-free in 3 years. Never a single breakdown. Traded up for an '05, and in 3 years have put 120K on this one. When this one is eventually deemed ready for trade, I'll be getting another one. Pushing a 1/4 million miles and no serious mechanical issues, and not one time was I left stranded. What do you think my opinion is of them?

Legendary reliability is right.

I am still driving my 1988 4Runner daily. It is also my off road hunting vehicle.
It has conquered the Rocky Mountains, and most of the swamp roads in Florida. Appalachian Mountains as well.
That is in addition to running up almost half a million highway miles.
Everything but the A/C still works great. I get 22 mpg around town, and 27 on the highway, loaded with camping gear. laugh

I have a 1990(it was built in August, 1989) 4Runner with over 200,000 miles. Still perfectly reliable.

Replaced all the belts and hoses and the water pump at 100,000 and it has been good to go ever since.

The only thing I worry about is the road salt here. Do they salt in MN?

Have a 2006 but no rust yet but...a little more squirrely than a full-sized. Prefer the 4Runner all around, especially hunting out of it.

They salt for ice here and then use loads of salt brine on the gravel roads for dust in summer--regardless of the proximity to run off into the waterways.

Sam, yours was one I was thinking about when I found this one. If I get it, I hope it lasts half as long as yours. I think Seafire has one that's been around a few blocks too.

Bought the Wife a new one in '97

It now has 150,000 on it and going strong.

We like it so well, that I got an '04 Tacoma for me!

Best rigs we've ever owned.

Leighton,

This one is listed at 20mpg on the highway, so I'm figuring 18 is where she'll come in at. I can live with that if it lasts a long time.

There are a few Ford Explorers I'm interested in as well.

Yes, salt is a concern here, but it is for all cars. Northern MN is where it's worse yet. I do wash the car a lot in the winter.

I'm going to call tomorrow and have the salesman bring it to their dealership. It's about an hour away at a different dealership.

It's a possibility, a good one.

My 96 Tacoma is still my favorite truck I've had. It was the smaller version of what Toyota puts out now. It was a single cab, 4cyl, 4x4, 5 speed manual. I had to get rid of it because I had a wife, dog, and a kid on the way and it wasn't going to work.

She doesn't get used all the time anymore... but sees a lot of use in the summer going back up on Forest Service roads etc..

Just changed the oil on her yesterday, Mobil ONE 0w40 ( secret to long engine life)... then put a 100 miles on her in the backcountry...

[Linked Image]

510,000 Miles... 2200 RE... ( and yeah, she's broken in! whistle )

Mine runs about 22 MPG.. on the highway it gets about the same maybe up to 24 at times...lots of mountains here...

when it lived back east it got 26 to 27 on the highway, but we are talking driving in flat places like Florida...

I also run heavy tires on mine...16 inch rims... 245/75/16 LT 10 ply tires, plus 2500lb overload springs on the back...

mine ride likes a brick...but I don't care, as I expect that out of a 'truck'...

the current tires are BF Goodrich Commercial T/As...80K on the tires...with still another 40 to 50 K on more left on them... not a lot of weight on them, for their construction..

also don't have to worry about Rock Cuts on them like I did with 6 ply tires....
