My local gun shop has a very handsome display of Coopers for sale. Many are in skinny calibers, and all are rather expensive, compared to, for example, a Kimber.
I have also seen some rather long barrels and rollover cheek pieces that seem prone to getting chipped when dragged through the woods.
Which Coopers, model, caliber and barrel length, are most likely to get fielded for deer and up?

The Model 54 repeater is light enough and short enough (22 inch bbl). Available in good deer rounds like 260, 7/08, and 308. (Also 243 and 250 Savage!) Available with synthetic stock. Not cheap but reliably very accurate with great triggers.

Look at the mod 52 and 54 Excalibur, the 308 Win has a 22" barrel and 270 Win 30.06 etc have 24" tubes but you said tough, they aren't available in stainless so I don't know what to tell ya there and they come in some fugly lookin red spiderweb stock (I don't know who the crackhead was that thought of that one)but for a hunting rifle I don't guess looks are that important, I'm just too old school to be carrying around a red hunting rifle......Grin............Hb

Nice looking rifle! What does the Excalibur weigh? I Got a Jackson Hunter in 25-06 that is just a little heavier than I like, and thinking of getting an Excalibur.
Thanks HeavyBarrel

Cooper had at least two stainless rifles on display at the SHOT Show a couple of weeks ago.

This is excellent news, I have been waiting on Cooper to build the Excaliber in stainless for years and it looks like I don't have to buy one with a red stock so more good news!........Hb

I have two model 52 Coopers (30-06 and 270). They both are so accurate that they are boring. I have had excellent service from Cooper, plus they are a local company for me. So, I will support them. I actually like the red spiderweb stock on the Jackson hunter rifle. I Do not own a Kimber because I have heard so many bad reports on barrels and service. Daryl.

Got a M542 'Excalibur' in 338/06 plus a M52 'Classic' 30/06and a M54 'Classic' in 7MM/08. Both the 'Classics' have the French Walnut upgrade and see use in the field every year. I wouldn't buy them if I couldn't hunt with them. Vernon

Of the 5 Coopers I have handled with the standard wood which is Claro that they rate as XX, I'd only say one of them had a really pretty stock. And of course that's the one I sold and I wish I had back. The other 4 (80%) are pretty plain. Plain enough that I don't think you'd feel too bad if they got a few marks from use in the field. The advantage of taking a rifle with the standard wood stock is that you can probably get one right away from places like Cabelas without having to wait 6 months for one you order from Cooper. So how bad do you want the synthetic stock? Bad enough to pay extra and to wait 6 months? One downside to their wood stocks is that they use an oil finish which isn't great for wet weather.

Coopers are truly awesome guns. They are as good as full blown customs at 1/2 the price.
