I've been a subscriber since 2010 mostly for the caliber and reloading data. It doesn't cost much per year, but given the many years that I have had Oehler's ballistics program with free upgrades, a subscription for it would have been way more expensive. Software by subscription is the new business model because the product looks cheaper initially, but in the end consumers pay much more for a given product.
The other part I don't like about web based software is that I can't control what features get added or removed. Once I learn a product and it does what I want it to do I hate having to deal with changes that are irrelevant to me. It's not that I don't like improvement, but many times change is for the sake of change just to drive sales. I like to be in control of whether or not the software I use changes.
