You'll lose even more when the gunsmith cuts 1" off the shank end to rethread it.

Then you'll have to get a Sako-type extractor installed in the push-feed boltface.

Not recommended.

If you want an inexpensive but more than adequate barrel check out ER Shaw at ershawbarrels.com

It would be at least as good as a factory Mark X barrel and likely much better.

A Sako extractor??? WTF is with that? Cut 1" off the shank??? WTF?

It don't have to be cut and it could be threaded satisfactorily although it may not look very pretty. Is the action already a magnum? If not then you need a new bolt. Don't know of anyone who would do a Sako conversion on a push feed model 70. In the long run, you are always out a bunch of money using a takeoff barrel in a project. Buy a good barrel, not a ER Shaw

IIRC, a Ruger 77 barrel will screw onto a Winchester/USRA 70 action with a lot less work than the effort necessary to rework a LR commercial Mauser barrel.

My bad on the extractor. blush But a Mark X is just a 98 Mauser. The threads are 12V. Threads on a post-64 M70 are 16V. Don't think you can just "rethread" the existing shank.

Like I said above, 1.100" OD vs. 1.060" will work, like I said. Of course, then again, why? Get a new barrel, a good one and be happy.

Winchester barrel threads are 1.00 X 16TPI so yes the Mauser tenon can be turned down and rethreaded. I have done it before for customers.
